    • A method of printing on a mixed sequence of media sheets uses a printer with a print head that is adjustable in height relative to a print surface that supports the media sheets. The media sheets differ in their specifications that define an admissible range for the height of the print head. The method includes the steps of retrieving admissible height ranges for a plurality of media sheets that are scheduled for printing, searching for a height value that is contained in the admissible range of all scheduled sheets, if such a height value is found, adjusting the print head to that height value, and if such height value is not found, proceeding to a problem handling routine.

    • An ink jet printer has a number of ink discharge nozzles, a number of actuators respectively associated with the nozzles and arranged to create pressure waves in the ink to be discharged from the respective nozzles, and a controller arranged to apply drive signals to the actuators in accordance with print instructions for an image to be printed. The drive signals include print pulses causing ink droplets to be ejected from the nozzles at timings when the respective nozzle faces an image part of a print medium, and spitting pulses causing ink droplets to be ejected from the nozzles at timings when the respective nozzle faces a non-image part of the print medium. The drive signals further include pre-fire pulses which have an amplitude below a threshold at which ink droplets are ejected, and the controller is arranged to apply the spitting pulses in the form of combined pulse sequences that each include a number of pre-fire pulses preceding the spitting pulse.

    • A method is provided for reducing a background in a raster image as generated from capturing a hardcopy original. The background indicates a deviation between a lightness value of a subset of pixels in the raster image and a maximum lightness value of raster image input values, contrasting with dark information in the image. Two areas around the target pixel are defined, one area being substantially smaller than the other. An average of a lightness value of the pixels in each of the two areas are combined to obtain a background parameter, indicating a locally varying background in the raster image. A target pixel lightness value is scaled using the background parameter and the maximum lightness value.
