    • A spray-coating device for spraying liquid or powdered coating material on articles includes a transformer for stepping up an alternating voltage and a voltage multiplier circuit for converting the output of the transformer to a high DC output for driving a charging electrode in the spray-coating device. The alternating voltage for the transformer is obtained from a controllable source of alternating voltage which produces a sinusoidal voltage whose frequency is constantly adjusted such that the voltage and current flowing through the transformer are in phase with one another. This assures that the transformer is operated at its resonant frequency.

    • Electrostatic spraying equipment having, in a working area likely to contain inflammable mixtures, at least a terminal part of a high-voltage generator with an electrode for charging a jet of material sprayed from a sprayer. At least one low-voltage line connects the terminal part of the generator to a remotely sited power supply equipped with cut-out device. A protective device designed to prevent repeated arcing in the working area as a result of deterioration of the low-voltage line comprises, in series with the line, a sensing device for sensing a current lower than a predetermined minimum current. A control device responsive to the sensing device are connected to the aforementioned cut-out device so as to operate them when a current in the line lower than the predetermined minimum is sensed.

    • An improved control cable terminal for an electrostatic spraying gun includes a magnetically operated reed switch and an insulating body encapsulating both the switch and control wires at the gun end of the control cable. The body defines a switch plug insertable into the gun in operative relationship with a magnetic trigger element. Control cable plugs and receptacles are eliminated as are stresses on the control wires and reed switch. A bracket secures the insulating body to a tool removable coupling holding an electrostatic cable in the gun. The bracket prevents removal of the control cable switch plug, except by tool removal of the electrostatic cable coupling nut.

    • In a pulse power source for applying a pulse voltage to a capacitive load; a series resonance circuit capable of generating transient oscillation is formed of the capacitive load adapted to be applied with the pulse voltage, an inductance for generating transient oscillation and a power source capacitor; the capacitive load is charged from the power source capacitor by first closing one of two switch elements provided in the midway of the resonance circuit, that is, a load charging switch element to make the voltage across said capacitive load rise up to about twice the voltage across the power source capacitor after a period equal to about 1/2 of a transient oscillation period of said series resonance circuit, to form a rising edge of the desired pulse voltage; then reversely, the power source capacitor is charged from the capacitive load by closing the other switch element, that is, a charge recovering switch element after first said one switch element has been closed to make the voltage across said capacitive load fall down, to form a falling edge of the desired pulse voltage; and further a residual charge on said capacitive load is discharged by closing still another switch element provided in parallel to said capacitive load, to improve the falling edge of the desired pulse voltage; whereby a steep pulse voltage can be applied to said capacitive load with a low power loss.

    • A safety power supply system for electrostatic spray coating utilized high frequency (audio or radio frequencies) rectified DC pulses to provide the high voltage between an electrode on a spray gun and work to be coated. A high resistance direct electrical path to ground is provided for all parts of a coating system charged to high voltage during coating operations including highly conductive coating materials. For manual spray guns small electrodes or the atomizing edge of a coating material provides the electrode making it virtually impossible for an operator to come in contact with high voltage charged parts before a charge is substantially bled to ground.

    • A high voltage electrostatic spray coating power supply which turns-off automatically when an overvoltage and/or overcurrent is detected, thereby reducing electrical shock and ignition hazards when spraying in an explosive atmosphere. Included is an unregulated DC supply, a DC voltage regulator, an inverter, and a multiplier of the capacitor/diode type which applies high DC voltage to an electrostatic spray gun. Ground return current from the multiplier output to a common internal ground lead is monitored and if it exceeds a predetermined selectable maximum is effective, via a turn-off circuit, to a) turn-off the DC regulator and b) short-circuit the regulator output and inverter input to the common ground. This prevents power transfer between the unregulated DC source and the voltage multiplier, as well as discharges electrical energy stored in the regulator smoothing capacitors and in the multiplier transformer. An overvoltage circuit is also included to independently turn-off the power supply when the regulator output voltage exceeds a predetermined maximum.
