    • An apparatus for electrostatically spray-coating a workpiece with conductive paint which includes a color changeover valve mechanism for selectively supplying conductive paint, cleaning liquid and air. A flush valve mechanism is provided for selectively supplying the cleaning liquid and the air. A first directional control valve includes an outlet and inlets. The inlets are connected to feed lines extending from the color changeover valve mechanism and the flush valve mechanism, respectively. A block line is made of an insulating material and has a first end connected to the outlet of the first directional control valve. The block line includes a second end in communication with the first end. A second directional control valve is provided having outlets and an inlet. The inlet is connected to the second end of the block line. An intermediate reservoir is connected via a feed line to one of outlets of the second directional control valve. A waste-liquid tank is connected via a first discharge line to a second outlet of the second directional control valve. A spray gun is connected via a delivery line to the intermediate reservoir. A second discharge line is branched from the delivery line via a changeover valve. A discharge line cleaning mechanism is provided for selectively supplying at least cleaning liquid and air to the second discharge line. A high voltage is applied to the conductive paint between the second directional control valve and the spray gun.

    • A stream of carrier gas with powder particles is introduced at the feedingnd (2) of a powder pipe (1) in the direction of arrow (3) for coating workpieces. The material of the coating powder, of the powder pipe (1) and of displacement bodies (21, 22) built in the latter have different dielectric constants. At a certain distance from the outlet end (5) is mounted a charging device (12) provided with boosting electrodes (15) projecting inwardly and connected through a protective resistance (15) to a high-voltage supply (17). A rear counter-electrode (7, 26, 27) comprises an earthed conductive body (7). The displacement bodies (21, 22) accelerate the flow of powder particles. The latter come repeatedly in contact with the inner surface (11) of the powder pipe (1) and the displacement bodies (21, 22) communicating negatively charged particles (10) to them, after charge separation, whereas the positively charged particles (4) remain attached to the powder particles. The concentration of negatively (10) and positively (4) charged particles at opposite ends (2, 5) of the pipe is increased through the electrostatic field acting between the boosting electrodes (13) and the counter-electrode (7, 26, 27). The coating powder is thus so highly charged that an outer electrostatic field between a spraying electrode and the workpiece can be dispensed with.

    • An apparatus for surface treatment, especially for etching and/or coating workpieces by ion bombardment is described. This apparatus comprises at least one ionization chamber having at least one hot cathode, gas atoms being introduced into this chamber for the low-voltage arc-discharge between the ionization chamber and at least one anode inside the treatment chamber connected to a vacuum pump. At least one magnet coil mounted within the treatment chamber is used to control the ion density of the low-voltage arc-discharge and is mounted inside the treament chamber. The workpieces to be treated are arranged outside these magnet coils. Homogeneous surface treatment of the workpieces is ensured by the selected arrangement of magnet coils and workpieces.

    • A spray head for a spray nozzle including a hood providing a surface extending forward from the nozzle and also supporting insulating mountings for electrodes energizable to exert an inductive charging field or spray from the nozzle. The surface is earthed or earthy in operation to encourage collection of stray or return spray and stop stray or return spray affecting the charging field by landing on the electrodes or their mountings. The collected spray may be retained as liquid or caused to flow to projections to again leave the spray head as small droplets. The field from the electrodes may shape the spray.

    • Atmospheric occurrences that decrease visibility, particularly fog, smoke, smog and the like, are cleared at sites such as airports by an array of EGD spray units emitting submicron size charged water droplets to attach to airborne particulates and electrostatically precipitate those to ground. Independent variables of the array and the EGD jets from the spray units are controlled to control the dependent variables characterizing the space-charge cloud thus developed. The methods and apparatus control the height to which clearing of the airborne particulates occurs to improve visibility and the time required for such clearing. Specific compact spray units are self-contained, can be radio operated, and are movable. Placement of the units for removal of radiation and advection fog with respect to airport runways include a square array of the spray units proximate the runway for radiation fog control and upwind location of arrays for advection fog precipitation. Specific characteristics of small, medium and large spray units suitable for use in the arrays are set forth.
