    • A dual band, phased array antenna especially adaptable for tactical radar capable of performing search, track and identification in a hostile jamming environment. The dual band array antenna is essentially two antennas sharing a common antenna aperture. The two antennas possess separate feed system and beam steering control. Thus, the beams for each frequency band can be steered independently and simultaneously. This design utilizes an ultra-wide band radiating element which can operate over approximately an octave bandwidth encompassing two adjacent microwave bands. In particular, the dual band signals can be received efficiently by the radiating element. A dual band coaxial-to-waveguide transition can be used to carry the signals to a diplexer. The dual band signals are separated at the diplexer and can be processed in separate feed networks. The advantages of this dual band phased array technique include not only good impedance characteristics but also the absence of grating lobe formation and cross coupling problems.

    • A novel structure in a coaxial to waveguide transmission line transition includes a waveguide section having longitudinally extending ridges on two opposed walls; a metal impedance transition member extending from one wall of the waveguide having a geometry within the waveguide of three right cylinders of dissimilar size stacked upon one another to form a steplike arrangement and a central passage therethrough; a dielectric cylindrical member extends into said waveguide from an opening in a waveguide wall opposed to that of the transition member and is in abutting relationship with the end of said impedance transition member; an elongate rodlike conductor extends axially through said dielectric member and said impedance transition; further each of the longitudinally extending waveguide ridges includes an outwardly flared portion of increasing width, one of which abuts the periphery of the lower step of said transition member and the other of which is spaced a predetermined distance from said dielectric member to define a gap; and a waveguide cavity is formed on one side of said impedance transition member and a positionable shorting wall borders one side of said cavity.

    • Improved apparatus for coupling microwave energy from coaxial transmission line to rectangular waveguide and vice versa. A cover, which includes a conductive material, is positioned on one end of a rectangular waveguide. The cover has an opening for receiving the center conductor of a coaxial transmission line and has means for electrically connecting the outer conductor of the coaxial transmission line to the conductive material of the cover. A conductive mass is positioned within the waveguide in spaced relation with its walls and the cover. The center conductor of the coaxial transmission line is in electrically conductive relation with the conductive mass. A hook-shaped conductive element has one of its ends in electrically conductive relation with the conductive mass and has its other end terminating within the waveguide at a location spaced from the waveguide walls and the cover. The conductive mass is located between the cover and the hook-shaped element, and the curvature of the hook-shaped element preferably is in a plane parallel to the narrow walls of the waveguide and off-set from its axis parallel to these narrow walls. Preferably the ends of the hook-shaped element are substantially equally spaced from the wide walls of the waveguide.
