    • A generation control system for a vehicle includes an ac generator, a field current control unit that controls the duty ratio of field current of the ac generator, a field current detector, a load current detector, a generator rotation speed detector, a driving-torque-increase calculator that calculates a predicted increase in driving torque of the ac generator from increase in the current supplied to an electric load. The driving-torque-increase calculator includes first output current calculator that calculates present output current of the ac generator from the generator's rotation speed and the field current and second output current calculator that calculates predicted output current of the ac generator from the first output current and the increase in the current supplied to the electric load. A predicted increase in driving torque of the ac generator is calculated from a difference between the present driving torque and a driving torque that corresponds to the predicted output current.

    • A line power unit controls electrical power delivery to a grid from a three phase permanent magnet generator. A line power unit controller receives a power level command and controls a main inverter that draws DC power from a DC bus to deliver the commanded power to a grid. The DC bus is fed DC voltage via a three phase permanent magnet generator and a rectifier. The inverter delivers power to the grid via a filter, transformer and main contactor. The line power unit controller also controls the main contactor to break the connection with the grid. A precharge circuit draws power from the grid to precharge the DC bus to a precharge voltage. Alternatives include a start inverter separate from the main inverter that permits simultaneous delivery of power to the grid and commutation of the permanent magnet generator as a motor to spin an engine connected thereto at a speed sufficient to permit engine starting. Another alternative utilizes a single inverter for engine starting and power delivery which does not permit these operations to be simultaneously performed. Further alternatives include eliminating the transformer by utilizing a high-voltage rated main inverter.

    • The excitation current in the rotor winding of a motor vehicle alternator is regulated by this method. The alternator produces a rectified output voltage to be regulated, this output voltage being a periodic voltage having a period T consisting of a first phase T.sub.1 in which the battery voltage is applied to the rotor winding, and a second phase T.sub.2 in which the battery voltage is not applied to the rotor winding. The method includes: measuring the rectified voltage by sampling during each period T; comparing the measured value with a calculated reference value; and deducing from this comparison three numerical values. The first of these corresponds to the difference between the measured value of the rectified voltage and the reference value. The second of these numerical values is a closed loop excitation value calculated in each period T by adding the corresponding value measured in the preceding period to the first numerical value, to which a first correcting factor is applied. The third numerical value is an open loop excitation value calculated, in each period T, by adding together the closed loop excitation value already calculated in the same period and the first numerical value, to which a second correcting factor is applied. The duration of the first phase of the rectified voltage is determined by the value of the open loop excitation.
