    • A personal locator beacon (PLB) that is used to transmit a radio frequency emergency distress signal. The PLB contains a GPS receiver to determine the exact global positioning coordinates of the beacon. The transmitted distress signal contains a security message that is represented through at least one bit. This bit is embedded into the standard bit string that is transmitted and can warn of impending danger at the beacon location, such as a hostage situation. The beacon is triggered through different varieties of user interfaces that utilize assorted combinations of actuators and numeric keypads. Another bit can also be embedded into the standard bit stream to represent whether or not the beacon is used by the military.

    • An improved search and rescue transponder having an improved housing assembly that permits the device to be turned on or off by rotating one segment of the housing relative to the other for ease of use even with heavy or bulky gloves. In addition, the housing assembly exterior surface includes a plurality of longitudinal ridges for ease in gripping. The housing assembly includes an upper housing and lower housing joined by a retaining ring and O-ring seal, eliminating the need for fasteners for manufacturing efficiency. The lower housing includes quick disconnect that attaches to a mounting disk affixed to a ship or life raft. The mounting disk includes a plurality of resilient fingers which act in conjunction with cam surfaces on the flange of the lower housing, which when rotated together allow for a quick disconnect. The improved overall reduced size and configuration of the housing assembly contains five batteries arranged circularly in a side-by-side array, packed together in the lower housing, allowing for a SART of reduced length and easily handling configuration.

    • An Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon (EPIRB) comprising an integrated wireless receiver, a graphical display device, capability to utilize both internal and external GPS coordinate sources, an infrared background lighting adjustment algorithm, and a multi-LED strobe light array. The receiver provides a return communications path back to the beacon, which is used to acknowledge the receipt of the beacon's outgoing emergency signal by Search and Rescue satellites. The display is used to visually display various operational status information as well as any received messages coming back into the receiver. The GPS receiver system switches between internally derived and/or externally supplied GPS coordinates. The present invention also incorporates an Automatic Background Light Adjustment (ABLA) algorithm to compensate for the maximum range of light intensity encountered by infrared communications LEDs during daytime and nighttime operation. Additionally, a multi-LED array is used to flash a signaling strobe in a universal hemispherical pattern.

    • A hydrostatic release for securing an emergency position indicating radio beacon (EPIRB) to a shipboard surface to withstand high G-forces while having a release mechanism that if the ship were to sink will release the EPIRB at a pre-determined water pressure which is equivalent to depth of water. The elongated shaft is connected at one end to an EPIRB housing and at the other end to the EPIRB housing cover. Once the cover is released by the water pressure, the EPIRB will float to the ocean surface.
