    • Methods to test the operation of the pick-up coil without having to de-energize the power line serving as the power line carrier in order to perform testing on the pick-up coil. A sweep wave is introduced and parameters of the pick-up coil can be measured to detect the presence or absence of resonant behavior indicative of the health of the pick-up coil. Testing capabilities may be incorporated into a power line carrier receiver and use the connections between the pick-up coils and the receiver to perform the pick-up coil test. Several methods for evaluating the pick-up coil response to a series of test inputs of different frequencies are presented. These methods could be incorporated in a pick-up coil testing device that is independent of a receiver.

    • Extensions to the concept of using a power line carrier to convey a data record from the secondary side of a first transformer to a receiver in a power distribution substation include receiving the data record over a secondary data path in the event that the primary path is not available. The data record received over the secondary path through a second transformer rather than the first transformer must not interfere with other data transmissions from other transmitters and needs to identify the source of the transmission. An alternative to using a secondary data path through second transformer rather than the first transformer is to provide a data bridge around an opening in the primary path. This abstract is drafted to aid those searching for relevant patents and does not represent a legal limit on the scope of claims arising from patents claiming priority to this application.

    • Use of power line carrier communications which introduces a high frequency analog signal onto a cable used to convey power in a portion of an electric distribution network to send a data communication received at a distant receiver through the use of pick-up coil. Changes in the power level of signals received from a remote power line carrier transmitter may indicate that the pick-up coil receiving the signal is starting to degrade. The aggregation of certain power line carrier conveyed data communications about remote transformers and related equipment may be used to look for problems in this transmitter/receiver communication network. The disclosure includes the aggregation of data communications from one transmitter received at several different power line carrier pick-up coils through the phenomenon of cross talk or through the purposeful provision of data along an alternative communication path.
