    • At a first time, an authorized directive is received by the utility provider to perform an operative action for shedding load of a power system by a minimum system load value on or before a second time. The utility provider may operate the SCADA/DCS system to assist in selecting a set of circuits wherein the total circuit load value of the selection is greater than or equal to the minimum system load value. In response to circuit selection, the SCADA/DCS system selects the corresponding set of circuit breakers and consults the circuit-subscriber notification database to select a set of subscribers corresponding to the selected set of circuits. A system, product, and/or device adapted for communicating data in response to circuit selection may then be accessed by the SCADA/DCS system to communicate to the selected set of subscribers an intention of performing the operative action on or before the second time. The utility provider may then program and/or operate the SCADA/DCS system to perform the operative action upon the selected set of circuit breakers on or before said second time.

    • To allow meter data users to have access to needed information and at the same time address the rapidly shifting requirements of the deregulated marketplace, a new business model, apparatus and system are provided. A common metering device measures raw data and a system composed of independent services or applications collect and process raw metered data and then make that data available to interested parties. This new model removes the dependence upon an automatic meter reading (AMR) system provider, as the sole provider, by creating a system to enable a competitive environment where services (applications, information, networking, etc.) rather than systems are selected and paid for on a leased or pay-per-use basis. One example of such a networked-based, extensible metering system comprises a network server, a wide area network coupled to the network server, and a plurality of network-enabled meters coupled to the network. The meters collect data and the network server provides at least one metering application to the meters. In addition, the meters may be programmed to communicate via a predefined protocol and to deliver a protocol interface to a storage medium on the network, which enables the network to provide the protocol interface to users or applications requiring information from the meters and the users/applications to communicate with the meters to access the required information.

    • A system by which an electric power utility can selectively limit power supplied to homeowners or other users to conserve electricity in periods of higher usage/shortages. Each home that is participating in the system has “smart switches” installed at outlet locations, for example, a stove, clothes dryer, television sets, lamp, etc. The power utility sends communications either through cell phone technology, telephone, or other communication link to the home to signal the various smart switches to limit electrical output (either blocking current flow totally, or periodically). The electric utility sends its communication to a monitoring and control computer which in turn controls the various smart switches. Also, information of power usage is transmitted to the smart switches back to the utility company so that bills can be prepared, with savings also specified in the bill.
