    • A method to help restrict operation of a mobile device in a situation where a user of the device may be distracted, such as when the user is driving a motor vehicle. The device presents the user with a test and reveals the solution to the test, and the user must then enter into the device the revealed solution within a predefined period of time. If the user enters the revealed solution within the predefined period of time, then a fair assumption is that the user is not distracted. On the other hand, if the user does not enter the revealed solution within the predefined period of time, then a fair assumption is that the user is distracted (e.g., is driving), in which case the device will responsively change an operational characteristic of the device so as to restrict the user's interaction with and operation of the device.

    • Methods and systems are provided for dynamic adjustment of forward-link traffic-channel power levels based on forward-link RF conditions. In an exemplary embodiment, a base station provides service on a carrier in a wireless coverage area. The base station computes an Ec/Ior value for the carrier. Based at least in part on the computed Ec/Ior value, the base station adjusts at least one of an initial traffic-channel power level, a minimum traffic-channel power level, and a maximum traffic-channel power level for the carrier. As an example, if Ec/Ior is above a certain threshold, the base station may increase all three of the power levels, so as to improve service quality and coverage of its traffic channels, among other advantages.

    • Methods and systems are provided for carrier selection based on type of packet flow. Service is provided to access terminals on a plurality of carriers in a wireless coverage area. A request is received from a first access terminal. The request indicates that the first access terminal is requesting a packet flow, and the request comprises a packet-flow-type indication. It is determined whether the packet-flow-type indication is associated with an expedited-forwarding quality of service (QoS). If the packet-flow-type indication is associated with an expedited-forwarding QoS, it is further determined that, among the plurality of carriers, a first carrier has the fewest ongoing packet flows having the packet-flow-type indication; responsively, the first access terminal is instructed to conduct the requested packet flow on the first carrier.

    • Methods and systems are provided for synchronizing reservation status between an access terminal and an access node. In one embodiment, an access terminal receives a report from an access node, the report reflecting a first set of reservations, wherein the first set is a set of reservations that the access node is maintaining with respect to communicating with the access terminal. In response to receiving the report, the access terminal compares the first set of reservations with a second set of reservations, wherein the second set is a set of reservations that the access terminal is maintaining with respect to communicating with the access node. Upon comparing the first set with the second set, the access terminal determines that the first set is not equal to the second set, and responsively sends one or more messages to the access node to cause the access node to modify the first set to match the second set.

    • Methods and systems are provided for dynamic determination of EV-DO control-channel bit rate based on forward-link timeslot utilization. Service is provided to access terminals on a carrier in a wireless coverage area. The carrier comprises timeslots that can be active or idle. Active timeslots comprise a data channel; idle timeslots do not. The data channel is arranged to transmit user-traffic information, and also to transmit control-channel information at a bit rate that can be set to a first or second value, where the second value is greater than the first value. A number of active timeslots on the carrier in the coverage area over a time period is determined. It is further determined whether that number is less than a threshold number. If so, the bit rate is set to the first value; if not, the bit rate is set to the second value.
