    • A system and process for providing a geometric model database for use in an ubiquitous computing environment. In general, the geometric model database system and process is capable of accepting information about the geometric state of the environment, building a geometric model of this environment, maintaining and storing the geometric model, and handling queries about the environment's geometric state. The task of building a geometric model begins by establishing a set of entities that are of interest in the environment. An entity represents an object which exists in the physical world. In the geometric model database, an entity is represented by a coordinate frame and an extent. Extents refer to the physical size, or some service region such as a field of view, associated with an entity. The location of an entity in the physical world is defined using “measurements”. In general, a measurement is simply a mathematical description of the geometric relationship between two entities. More precisely, a measurement describes the position and orientation of one entity's coordinate frame, expressed in terms of another entity's coordinate frame. Measurements originating at an entity's frame are expressed in terms of that frame. While various mathematical representations of the geometric relationship between entities could be employed, a preferred one characterizes a measurement as the relative position, and the relative orientation or heading, of two entities along with a covariance matrix which describes the uncertainty in these values.

    • A framework for providing user interaction with one or more networked devices. The invention allows for user configuration of networked computers such that each of the networked computer input and output devices interact with one another in a prescribed manner. The configuration associates relative geographic relationships for each networked computer using agent modules located on each networked computer that keeps track of the current location of a cursor based upon the geographic relationships. If the current cursor position corresponds to another networked computer, an agent module blocks incoming input streams so that they are not processed by the local computer, and transmits the input device signals to a remote agent module corresponding to the remote networked computer. The remote computer agent module injects the input device instructions into the remote system, which causes the remote computer to process the input stream from the local computer.

    • A resource reference is detected in a base resource, such as a web page or an email message. The resource reference refers to a target resource, such as another webpage or another email message. An appropriate activity-based resource type for the resource reference is then identified. The resource reference is then linked to an activity-based resource such that when the base resource is displayed and a user interacts with the resource reference, the activity-based resource is displayed to the user. The activity-based resource comprises a calculated field that has a value that indicates how one or more users have interacted with one or more resources. The value of the calculated field is calculated using activity data indicating how users interacted with the resources. The activity data is generated without receiving input of the activity data from the users.
