    • An apparatus, system, and method are disclosed for distributing events between application instances that are connected by intermittent connections. The application instances are provided with brokers that communicate with each other and their respective application instances according to an interface. The application instances provide events to the brokers, which forward them to the other brokers in the system. If a particular broker cannot be reached, the broker queues the events in a local data store, monitors the connection, and sends them once the connection is reestablished. The broker similarly receives events generated by the application instance associated with the remote broker that could not be communicated while the connection was inactive. As a result, users in the system are provided with a best possible and most complete state of the entire application that is available given the connection statuses in the system at a given time.

    • The method and system of the present invention provides a customizable and configurable data translation tool that transforms data from one learning format to another. The invention further provides a flexible handling of data sources by extracting source data, such as user and course data in an e-learning model, and transforming the data into a form that is compatible with a Learning Management System (LMS). The invention provides flexible data targets by transforming the data into a form that not only preserves all relevant information from the source for loading into the target LMS but also produces industry standard files including metadata that can be used to modify the course or produce a new course by using a course authoring tool. Course structure and progress data can be transferred to the new LMS by re-loading the content on the LMS and linking that content with the previous course and progress data. The present invention also generates new unique identifiers, and utilizes the capabilities of the user migration to link progress data, instructor information, and progress with previous identifiers.

    • The present invention provides a novel and non-obvious method and system for administering learning objects within a learning management system. A user can select various learning materials in the system, known as “learning objects”, and can aggregate these learning objects in a special category or “learning folder” directly on the system. The user can create and delete learning folders, and can modify each learning folder by adding or removing learning objects to and from the folder. Finally, while each learning folder created by a user can at first only be accessed by the user, a user can allow other learners in the system to access the folder by establishing a “learning link” for the folder, which dictates which other learners can access the learning folder.

    • The present invention provides a method, system and computer program product for administering learning objects within a learning management system. In the invention, a learner can select various learning materials in the system, known as “learning objects”, and can aggregate these learning objects in a special category or “learning folder” directly on the system. The learning folders can be separate from an existing course catalog of learning objects. Each learner can establish and delete learning folders, and can modify each learning folder by adding or removing learning objects to and from the folder. Finally, while each learning folder created by a user can at first only be accessed by the user, a user can allow other learners in the system to access the folder by establishing a “learning link” for the folder, which dictates which other learners can access the learning folder.

    • A metadata driven resource management method can include processing individual metadata documents to identify respective resource names and corresponding resource attributes specified within the individual metadata documents. New resource instances can be created to be managed based upon the respective resource names and the corresponding resource attributes identified within the individual metadata documents. Moreover, the new resource instances can be persisted in a resource non-specific database. Finally, individual ones of the new resource instances can be located and managed based upon the individual metadata documents. Advantageously, individual UI screens for managing selected resource instances can be generated based upon corresponding resource attributes specified within individual metadata documents used to create the selected resource instances.

    • The present invention is a system and method for maintaining the integrity of data during the offline mode of an e-learning process. The invention maintains the integrity of online course material in a learning management system by determining when a student attempts to access online course material and to downloaded the material from a learning management server to a student server for offline utilization resulting in an offline access mode. The invention then provides a set of procedures for monitoring the course material when it has been accessed. The set of procedures may determine that the course material is in an offline access mode and prevent the student from accessing the course object from the learning management server while the course object is in the offline access mode. Further, the system and method of the present invention may also serve to synchronize the course material between the learning management server and the student server by copying the course material from one server to another. In one embodiment, the system and method of the present invention can prevent a student from uploading the course material to the learning management server unless the student has completed the one or more progress objectives associated with the course object. Finally, the set of procedures can provide a security mechanism to insure the security of the online course material when it is in the offline access mode.
