    • Apparatus for verification of the operation and for diagnosing a fault condition in a data processing unit from a remote entry site. A communication channel allows data to be exchanged between the remote entry site and the data processing unit. The data processing unit contains two subsystems with associated control apparatus and error condition detection apparatus. In addition, the control apparatus of each subsystem can manipulate the apparatus of the other subsystem and has access to a plurality of registers in the both subsystems. One subsystem can be used to test the apparatus of the other subsystem, under control of input data from the remote entry site, and the result of the testing can be transferred for analysis to the remote entry site. The verification and diagnostic procedure can be performed from the remote entry site or extended procedures can be used to supplement internal programs via the communications channel.

    • A microprogram read only store includes a section for storing substitute microinstruction words which are referenced selectively by microprograms included within the other part of the same store. Each microinstruction word of the store includes a sentinel bit which when set to a predetermined state causes logic circuits to inhibit execution of that microinstruction word and cause the store to address the upper section of the store. During a next cycle of operation, a branch is made to the location specified in the upper section of the read only memory store. Microinstructions in the section are executed until a branch type microinstruction returns the store back to the microprogram under execution.

    • Diagnostic apparatus couples to a control store of a microprogrammed peripheral processor and is used to cycle the store in a plurality of different modes. The diagnostic apparatus includes mode control circuits which when set to a first mode, cause an instruction bit pattern established by a plurality of switches to be loaded into the local register of the control store when the apparatus detects that a predetermined address established by a set of address switches of the apparatus compares to the address stored in the address register of the control store. During the following cycle, the switch established instruction bit pattern substituted for the instruction stored at the location designated by the address switches is executed. When the diagnostic apparatus is set to operate in a second mode, the switches are set to establish a branch type instruction containing an address corresponding to a starting address in the store to be repeated of a microprogram routine. Each time the diagnostic apparatus detects a comparison, it forces the store and processor to a known state. During a following cycle, the microinstruction is loaded into the local register and executed causing the store to branch to the routine specified for execution.

    • The connector assembly of the invention basically includes three parts plus the connector itself. A lower plate and an upper plate are secured together to secure the connector therebetween. The connector is arranged to receive printed circuit contacts on the connector contact side and a cable on the connector terminal side. A third piece of the assembly is pivotably mounted between the upper and lower plates, which third piece includes retention plugs at one end and a depression point at the other end thereof. Depressing the depression point raises the plugs so as to either enable the insertion or removal of a circuit board having contacts to mate with the connector contacts. The circuit board includes retention holes for receiving the retention plugs so that there is a positive engagement of the plugs with the holes thereby securing the circuit board with the connector. Securing of the upper plate to the lower plate insures this positive connection retention.

    • Noise detection apparatus included in a peripheral controller operates to detect automatically when a noise record has been stored in the controller buffer storage unit. The detection apparatus includes control apparatus associated with the buffer storage unit which keeps track of the number of storage locations into which data characters have been stored during a transfer operation. Also included are means for selectively establishing one or more counts corresponding to a minimum number of data characters which must be stored in the buffer storage unit before the controller starts to transfer any data characters to a data processing unit. Each time a minimum number of characters has not been previously stored in the buffer unit when the controller receives a signal indicating the completion of the transfer, the controller clears the buffer storage unit of data characters and continues the transfer.

    • In a data processing system in which encoded data is transferred by a peripheral control unit between a central processing unit and one or more peripheral devices, method and apparatus for selecting and enabling one of a plurality of translators in the peripheral control unit to translate the encoded data from one code to another. Prior to transferring the encoded data between the central processing unit and the peripheral device, the central processing unit issues a command which contains an identification code word identifying the translator to be enabled. Each translator stores its own distinctive translator code word and each of these translator code words are successively compared with the identification code word until a match is obtained. When a match is obtained, the translator associated with the matching translator code word is enabled, and the encoded data is applied to the enabled translator for translation. In this manner, the peripheral control unit selfdetermines its translation capabilities and, for a given data transfer, enables the appropriate translator.
