    • A method and apparatus for sound source localization using microphones are disclosed. The method includes: receiving signals coming from a sound source through microphones covering all directions; distinguishing the received signals into those signals directly input to the microphones from the sound source (direct signals) and those signals indirectly input to the microphones (indirect signals); identifying a candidate region at which the sound source is present using locations of the microphones receiving direct signals; selecting a point in the candidate region as a candidate location; drawing one or more virtual tangent lines, contacting with the circumference of the apparatus, from the candidate location; placing locations of the microphones receiving indirect signals on the virtual tangent lines; and localizing the sound source on the basis of signals passing through the microphones receiving direct signals and through the virtual locations of the microphones receiving indirect signals.

    • An adaptive mode control apparatus and method for adaptive beamforming based on detection of a user direction sound are provided. The adaptive mode control apparatus includes a signal intensity detector that searches for signal intensity of each designated direction to detect signal intensity having a maximum value when a voice signal of each direction is input through at least one microphone; and an adaptive mode controller that compares the signal intensity having the maximum value detected through the signal intensity detector with a threshold value and determines whether to perform an adaptive mode of a Generalized Sidelobe Canceller (GSC) according to the comparison results. Therefore, a lack of control of adaptation of an adaptive filter of the conventional art is solved. That is, as one condition for guaranteeing performance of adaptive beamforming, adaptation of an adaptive filter is not performed when noise of a sound with a high autocorrelation is cancelled.

    • Disclosed is a method and an apparatus for recognizing characters using an image. A camera is activated according to a character recognition request and a preview mode is set for displaying an image photographed through the camera in real time. An auto focus of the camera is controlled and an image having a predetermined level of clarity is obtained for character recognition from the images obtained in the preview mode. The image for character recognition is character-recognition-processed so as to extract recognition result data. A final recognition character row is drawn that excludes non-character data from the recognition result data. A first word is combined including at least one character of the final recognition character row and a predetermined maximum number of characters. A dictionary database that stores dictionary information on various languages using the first word is searched, so as to provide the user with the corresponding word.
