    • The present invention relates to a method for transmitting of data frames from user equipment to a base station in a wireless telecommunication network. The method comprises an error control step adapted to retransmit the data frame from the user equipment to the base station, if the received data frame contains errors or if no acknowledge message is received by the user equipment within a predetermined amount of time. The method further comprises a transmission power control step adapted to control a transmission power of the data frames in such a way that the number of retransmissions corresponds to a predetermined number of target retransmission. The number of target retransmission is adapted depending on the traffic load and/or the number of users connected to the base station.

    • A radio resource method and apparatus involves allocating transmission channels to and from a node (26) based on the system load requirement. The load requirement is determined from the quality of service requirement which, in turn, is assessed from the data rate, the bit energy to noise power ratio and the signal classification produced by a converter and sorter (38) in response to signal transmission requests. A maximum load generator (40) delivers the maximum load from these parameters. A core calculator and assignor (42) performs a predetermined algorithm on the outputs of the converter and sorter (38) and the maximum load generator (40) and in response thereto controls a channel selector (30) which selects the channels to and from node (26).

    • The present invention provides a method and an apparatus for responding to changes in measurement of a system load in a spread spectrum communication system. Using a load control algorithm, for example, the spread spectrum communication system may handle sudden changes or variations, such as spikes or steps in system load measurements for an uplink and/or a downlink between a mobile unit and an access network. The load control algorithm determines whether a sudden variation of a measured system load is generated by a source not under a power control or is caused by a variation of a spread spectrum communication system load. A load control measure may be selectively applied to adjust one or more parameters associated with the system load. That is, an increase of a first new measurement value may be limited to a given maximum increment for one sampling time period of a plurality of sampling time periods in response to a spike in the system load or a desired response to a sudden increase of the system load may be delayed by a given maximum number of measurement samples. By allowing a limited increase, the response of the spread spectrum communication system to sudden changes of a system load may be controlled such that some blocking may occur but dropping of calls may be avoided. In this manner, the load control algorithm may avoid unnecessary dropping of calls.

    • Disclosed is a method and system for performing handoffs in a wireless communications network which incorporates Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) using shared supplemental spreading codes. In this method and system, a mobile station is assigned a first and second primary code and a first and second set of supplemental codes. The first primary and set of supplemental codes are associated with a first base station. The second primary and set of supplemental codes are associated with a second base station and assigned to the mobile station when the mobile station is entering into a handoff state. The first and second set of supplemental codes belong to a pool of shared supplemental codes associated with the first and second base stations, respectively. A specific supplemental code is assigned from each of the first and second sets of supplemental codes when a complete packet cannot be transmitted over a single transmission time interval on the first and second primary channels. Each of the specific supplemental codes must be currently available before it could be assigned. Mapping tables may be used to associate assigned specific supplemental code indicators to specific supplemental codes belonging to the first and second set of supplemental codes. The mapping tables may be Transport Combination Format (TFC) mapping tables, and the assigned specific supplemental code indicators may be Transport Combination Format Indicators (TFCI). A single TFCI or equivalent may be used to indicate a same or different supplemental code at each of the first and second base stations.
