    • A computer system including a modular keyboard assembly allows input device modules to be inserted into the keyboard assembly. The modular keyboard assembly includes a plurality of recessed opening in which an input device module can be inserted. A connector on the input device module mates with a connector in the recessed opening, thereby providing electrical contact between the input device module and the keyboard assembly. Each input device module can be replaced by the user with a different input device module providing flexibility to the user as well as minimizing the amount of cabling that typically confronts the user. A controller in the keyboard assembly determines the types of input device modules coupled to the keyboard assembly.

    • A method and system for emulating a hardware Internet Small Computer System Interface (iSCSI) Host Bus Adapter (HBA) without risking an interruption of communication between a computer and a remote secondary storage device is presented. During normal operations, a (hardware emulating) software iSCSI HBA drives a Network Interface Card (NIC) to afford communication between the computer and the remote secondary storage. If an operating system (OS) anomaly occurs in the computer, the NIC is normally disconnected by the OS. To maintain communication between the computer and the secondary storage device if such an event occurs, a failover network device is called up by the computer's System Management Memory (SMM) Basic Input Output System (BIOS), which allows uninterrupted communication to continue between the computer and remote secondary storage device.

    • Method and apparatus for positioning a three-dimensional object at a preselected position within a workstation. An optical system in the apparatus creates a 3-dimensional image of the object at the selected preselected position. An imaging device in the apparatus detects macroscopic features related to the extent of volume overlap between the object and image, and this information is used to direct the object, through a mechanical drive, toward a position of greater volume overlap with the image. In one aspect of the invention, the optical system produces a holographic image, and the imaging device is designed to detect both macroscopic features related to volume overlap, and interference fringes which form when the volume overlap between the image and object is within about 50 microns, providing object positioning to within about 50 microns. The apparatus may further include a system for analyzing the interference fringes, to determine the direction of object movement which increases fringe spacing, allowing volume overlap down to 1-3 microns or less.
