    • An imaging unit images a subject having an unevenness pattern on a surface. The imaging unit includes: a surface light source that emits with a constant output illumination light illuminating the surface of the subject; an imager that receives reflected light reflected by the surface of the subject; and a beam splitter that is arranged at a location at which the illumination light emitted from the surface light source and the reflected light incident on the imager intersect with each other. The illumination light emitted from the surface light source is incident on the surface of the subject via the beam splitter. The reflected light reflected by the surface of the subject is incident on the imager via the beam splitter. The illumination light incident on the surface of the subject includes parallel light that is perpendicularly incident on the surface of the subject, and diffused light.

    • A coin detecting apparatus has: a light source for emitting a light beam onto either of two surfaces of a coin; a half mirror for splitting the light beam reflected on the surface of the coin into a transmitted light beam and a reflected light beam; a full area sensor for obtaining a full image of the surface of the coin in accordance with one of the transmitted light beam and the reflected light beam; and a regional area sensor for obtaining a partial image of the surface of the coin in accordance with the other one of the transmitted light beam and the reflected light beam. By doing this, it is possible to provide a coin detecting apparatus capable of improving accuracy in coin detection and shortening time therein.

    • A coin discriminating apparatus includes a plurality of light emitting elements, an area sensor for optically detecting light reflected by the coin and producing pattern data of the coin, a mirror member provided on one side portion of the coin along the coin passage at a predetermined angle with an axis of the coin for reflecting light reflected from a side surface of the coin and leading the light to the area sensor, and a coin discriminator for discriminating the coin based on first pattern data produced by detecting light reflected from a lower surface of the coin and second pattern data produced by detecting light reflected by the side surface of the coin. According to the thus constituted coin discriminating apparatus, it is possible to discriminate coins by optically detecting the pattern of the obverse or reverse surface and the side surface of a coin with simple structure and with high accuracy.
