    • Apparatus is provided whereby a template for a pre-printed survey page is developed and captured as a computer data file, so that a number of pre-printed pages having the same form may be analysed to determine the presence or absence of a mark in each response position found on that form. The forms are analysed by feeding them, seriatim, to a reading station where a digital image of each form is captured using one or more video cameras. The same station is used to set up the template in the first instance, whereby data determining reference frame lines, landmark and whitemark positions within the reference frame, and response positions, may all be pre-determined. A plurality of cameras may be used for each pre-printed page, each camera viewing only a small portion of the page, with the fields of the cameras overlapping to some extent. By establishing spaced apart landmarks, and establishing the absolute values for landmarks which are printed on the page and whitemarks where no mark is expected on the page, the limits of greyscale may be determined for the page whereby the presence or absence of a mark in an expected response position may then be determined. If necessary, algorithms may be changed for broader searches at each response position to determine whether or not a response is made at that position.

    • A content moving device which enables providing content stored on a first user device, such as a DVR, in a first format and resolution to be provided to a second user device, such as a portable media player (PMP) in a second format and resolution. The content moving device identifies content on the first user device as candidate content which may be desired by the PMP and receives the candidate content from the DVR. The content moving device transcodes the candidate content at times independent of a request from the PMP for the content. The content moving device may provide a list of available transcoded content to the PMP for selection, and provide selected content to the PMP. The content moving device may also provide information relating to any protection schemes of the content provided to the PMP, such as DRM rights and decryption keys. The content moving device performs the often computationally intense and time consuming transcoding of user content to enable the user to move content between different user devices in a convenient manner.

    • A method and apparatus are provided for receiving a packet stream having fixed length packets. Data carried in the packet stream is selectively processed for output to a computer. A packet identifier filter selects particular packets from the recovered packet stream. A computer disk controller receives the packets selected by the filter and manages the transfer of packet data from the packets to and from a buffer. A data bus is coupled to the disk controller for communicating the packet data from the buffer to the computer. A data compression stage prior to the disk controller compresses packets from the recovered packet stream in order to provide a gap between data carried by successive packets to be provided by the disk controller. In this manner, a low cost disk controller chip can be used to control the buffering of data in a cable or satellite television modem that provides, e.g., Internet access.
