    • A tracking device for use in an optical tracking system is disclosed. The tracking device has a plurality of faces, each face having at least three markers which can be tracked by the optical tracking system. The markers may be infrared emitting diodes. The tracking system can individually activate the markers on each of the faces and select the markers which can be most accurately tracked by the tracking system. Portions of the faces are adjacent to one another to form clusters of emitters. The clusters of emitters are separated by at least a predetermined distance corresponding to the tolerance of the optical tracking system. The field of view of the tracking device approximates a section of a sphere centered at the device.

    • The invention provides systems and methods for providing access to a target site. Example systems may include a needle, a grid to guide the needle, a plate with an aperture, a member coupled to the plate and including a semispherical surface, and a hub slideably coupled to the plate by a guide. The system may also include a needle coupled to the hub, the needle including a magnetically trackable sensor positioned in a tip of the needle. The semispherical surface can be positioned against skin of a body and the hub slid relative to the plate along the guide to insert the needle through the aperture in the plate into the body until the tip reaches a target site. The hub can be locked by a lock mechanism when the tip of the needle reaches the target site, and an action performed on the target site through the needle.

    • The invention provides an image-guided medical instrument that utilizes a tracking device to track the location of at least a portion of the instrument on at least one image of a patient's anatomy. The instrument may include a handle having an operating element, an elongated flexible body member connected to the handle, wherein the body member includes a lumen, a transmission element housed within the lumen of the body member, and a treatment apparatus connected to end of the transmission element, wherein actuation of the operating element actuates the treatment apparatus via the transmission element. The body member also includes at least one sensor element that is utilized by the tracking device to determine position information regarding the treatment apparatus that is used to display the location of the treatment apparatus on the at least one image of the patient's anatomy.

    • An apparatus having an insertable portion for holding a position sensor is disclosed. The position sensor can transmit a signal indicative of its position with respect to a field generator. The insertable portion of the catheter has fiducial markings that are detectable by an imaging modality when the insertable portion is inserted into the anatomical body. The fiducial markings are asymmetrical about at least a first axis of the insertable portion. After the insertable portion has been inserted into the anatomical body, the fiducial markings can be detected to facilitate registration of the position sensor held in the insertable portion to the anatomical body. The apparatus also has a fixing mechanism for releasably fixing the insertable portion to the anatomical body. The non-symmetrical fiducial markings facilitate unambiguous registration of the insertable portion to the anatomical body. When the insertable portion is inserted into the anatomical body to a location of interest, the fixing mechanism substantially rigidly fixes the insertable portion of the catheter to a part of the anatomical body near the location of interest.

    • A device to releasably secure an object to a bone is disclosed. The device has a rotation restricting member which, while engaging the bone, prevents rotation of the member. The device also comprises an axial supporting member which axially secures the device to the bone, and preferably comprises a bone screw. While the bone screw and rotation restricting member engage the bone, a fastening mechanism fastens the rotation restricting member to the bone screw. In this way, objects can be releasably secured to the rotation restricting member or the bone screw by means of a clamp to temporarily axially and rotationally secure the objects to the bone. Preferably, the rotation restricting member comprises a sleeve and the fastening mechanism comprises a nut which engages threads on the bone screw. The sleeve comprises serrated teeth which, when biased towards the bone, engage the bone to restrict rotation of the sleeve. Rotation of the nut about the threads on the bone screw axially bias the sleeve towards the bone such that the serrated teeth engage the bone to restrict rotation of the sleeve about the screw and to fasten the sleeve to the bone screw.
