    • In one embodiment, an industrial automation device having a visual component is provided that includes a user viewable screen displaying a visual representation of a first object, wherein the first object comprises a plurality of properties, connections, and text associated with the object, second object, wherein the second object comprises a plurality of properties, connections, and text, and wherein the output from the first object is coupled to the second object via a connection, wherein the output of the first object is converted from a first type to a second type. A method is also provided that includes receiving a signal into a first object, outputting data from the first object, wherein the data has a first type, converting the data into a second type, and receiving the data into a second object.

    • A technique is disclosed for dynamically adjusting dimensions of characters, such as digits, displayed on a configurable display, such as in a human-machine interface. The height of the characters is fixed and the width is altered depending upon the number of characters to be displayed, resulting in changing aspect ratios for the characters. The width may be set to a predetermined maximum character width if all characters to be displayed will fit within the available space, or the width may be reduced to accommodate more characters. The technique may take into account cushion spaces for borders or frames, as well as spaces between characters. The resulting display allows for a change in the number of significant digits in a displayed numeral, while maintaining excellent readability.

    • A method and system are disclosed for governing access to stored data by first and second of processing devices for the purpose of writing to or modifying the stored data and reading the stored data. In one embodiment, the method includes determining whether first and second single-bit flags associated with a first data portion are the same or different and performing one of a first operation and a second operation (e.g., writing or reading operations) depending upon whether the first and second flags are the same or different, where the first and second operations are respectively performed by the first and second processing devices. The method further includes changing one of the first and second flags upon completion of the operation, where the first value is changed if the first operation was performed, and where the second value is changed if the second operation was performed.

    • A method and apparatus for manipulating diagnostic images obtained with computed tomography or magnetic resonance systems calculates the rotation of the data around two orthogonal axes and then compresses the data to a plane before rotating it about a third axis normal to the plane. Although apparently less efficient that the rotation about all three axes at once, this procedure is uniquely adapted to the limitations of computer memory access and the calculation speed limits of current computer hardware. Bifurcation of the rotation allows data to be accessed at consecutive addresses speeding memory operations. The bifurcation also permits some calculations to be preperformed and recalled for subsequent voxels. The compressed data is displayed as an image having a particular viewing angle determined by the rotations of the data.
