    • A client node on which a file system is mounted can be configured to efficiently handle content access requests after a snapshot is created. The client node can maintain generation numbers at a data block, a file, and a fileset level to determine whether a data block is part of a snapshot generation and consequently whether the data block is writable in a current generation. Data block mappings and write access permissions associated with the data blocks need not be revoked at the client node prior to creating the snapshot. Cached data block mappings can be accessed to identify data blocks for servicing a read request. The data block can be updated in place if the data block is not part of the snapshot generation. The write request can be serviced at a new data block if the data block is part of the snapshot generation.

    • A reconstitutable control assembly has a spider structure which supports control rods by detachable attachment joints. Each attachment joint includes a hollow connecting finger on the spider structure and an elongated detachable split upper end plug on each control rod. The split upper end plug includes a pair of separate upper and lower plug portions. The upper plug portion has upper, middle and lower sections, whereas the lower plug portion has upper, middle and lower segments. The upper section of the upper plug portion is rigidly attached to the connecting finger on the spider structure, whereas the lower segment of the lower plug portion is rigidly connected to the control rod. Also, the lower section of the upper plug portion and the middle segment of the lower plug portion have complementary threads defined thereon for rigidly threadably attaching the upper and lower plug portions to one another. Two embodiments of locking features can be used in conjunction with the upper and lower plug portions for locking them together so as to resist their unthreading from one another.

    • A burnable absorber cluster assembly includes a support plate, a plurality of burnable absorber rods, and an improved attachment joint for detachably connecting an upper end of each of the absorber rods to the support plate. The attachment joint includes a plug insert defined on the end of each of the rods, a hollow annular wall extending outwardly from each plug insert, holes defined through the support plate for receiving the plug inserts, and recesses formed in the support plate and connected with the holes therein. Each recess is conical-shaped and extends in flared fashion outwardly from one hole to a maximum diameter greater than the diameter of the hole. The annular wall on each plug insert is deformed into conformity with the shape of one of the recesses for providing an interengaging connection between the insert plug and the support plate in which the plug insert is disposed within the support plate hole. The annular wall is also redeformable upon application of a predetermined axially-directed force on the plug insert so as to remove the plug insert from the support plate hole and thereby detach the rod from the support plate. Also, each recess and annular wall have respective interengaging eccentric portions which prevents the plug insert on each rod end from rotating in its corresponding hole.

    • A nuclear reactor includes a plurality of upstanding guide thimbles and a plurality of control rods received in the guide thimbles and supported for movement relative to the thimbles between inserted and withdrawn positions. The control rods each include a tubular cladding member and an end plug attached to a lower end of the member. The improvement relates to the end plug having a stabilizing configuration which reduces lateral vibratory motion and contact between the control rod and its respective guide thimble. The end plug has an asymmetrical shape which places its terminal tip end in a position offset to one side of the central axis of the control rod and its end plug. As a result of interaction of the asymmetrical plug tip with coolant flowing along the control rod, a lateral steady-state force is imparted to the end plug which maintains the control rod end plug pressed against the wall of tis respective guide thimble. Several different asymmetrical configurations can be employed on the end plug.

The sleeve is composed of material similar to that of the guide thimble and attached to the end plug by an interlock connection. The interlock connection includes a circumferential groove formed in the end plug and a circumferential protuberance swaged or mechanically roll formed in the sleeve so as to extend into the end plug groove.

    • An improved top nozzle has an enclosure with a lower adapter plate and an upstanding sidewall surrounding and attached to the periphery thereof and an upper hold-down plate spaced above the adapter plate for abutmnet with a lower side of an upper core plate by a plurality of coil springs disposed between the lower and upper plates. The lower adapted plate and upper hold-down plate have respective openings and passageways defined therethrough in a pattern which matches that of the upper ends of the guide thimbles of the fuel assembly to which the improved top nozzle is attached. The upper ends of the guide thimbles extend upwardly through the adapter plate which is stationarily mounted on the guide thimbles. Tubular sleeves disposed between the lower and upper plates are surrounded by respective coil springs. The lower ends of the sleeves are releasably threaded to the upper ends of the guide thimbles, while the upper ends of the sleeves extend into the passageways of the upper hold-down plate. Bosses are disposed above the hold-down plate and connected thereto such that respective bores through the bosses are aligned with passageways of the hold-down plate. The bosses extend into holes in the upper core plate for aligning the fuel assembly with the upper core plate and for receiving the upper ends of the guide thimbles as the fuel assembly vertically moves upwardly relative to the upper core plate. A plurality of lugs on the periphery of the upper hold-down plate are coupled to the sidewall of the enclosure for accommodating vertical movement of the fuel assembly relative to the upper core plate.

    • A method of reconstituting a nuclear reactor fuel assembly having a top nozzle subassembly attached to the upper end of its control rod guide thimble wherein the subassembly includes an upper hold-down plate, a lower adapter plate, and a coils spring interposed between the two plates. A force is applied on the hold-down plate to compress the coil spring and transform the subassembly from its operation mode to a reconstitution mode. The wall of the thimble is severed just below a first attaching retainer mounted on the end of the thimble which defines the upward limit movement of the hold-down plate during the operation mode. Containing fingers are placed on the subassembly for removing it as a contained unit. The top nozzle subassembly or a new replacement subassembly is then replaced on the severed thimble in its reconstitution mode and a second attaching retainer is mounted on the upper end portion of the severed thimble in redefining the upward limit movement of the hold-down plate. The force is then released from the hold-down plate whereupon the top nozzle subassembly is transformed from its reconstitution mode to its operation mode.

    • According to one aspect of the present disclosure, a method and technique for hierarchical network failure handling in a clustered node environment is disclosed. The method includes: detecting a network failure by a node in a cluster, the cluster having plural nodes arranged in a hierarchy, wherein the network failure is associated with a subordinate node in the hierarchy to the detecting node; communicating the network failure from the detecting node to a superior node in the hierarchy; determining whether the network failure affects nodes higher than the detecting node in the hierarchy; and responsive to determining that the network failure does not affect nodes higher than the detecting node in the hierarchy, the detecting node initiating a protocol to expel the subordinate node from the cluster.
