    • The present invention provides a method for permitting fully detailed advertising of reachability information for some addresses in a network while efficiently summarizing reachability information for other addresses. At least one embodiment is implemented as part of a process used by logical nodes for advertising reachability information for members of a group of nodes represented by the logical node. At least one embodiment provides an “exception” instruction that allows detailed reachable address information to be advertised for an address that would otherwise be included in summary address information. At least one embodiment allows detailed reachability information to be advertised for the particular address while still allowing summarization of reachable address information for addresses sharing a common prefix with the “exception” address. At least one embodiment thereby allows detailed information to be advertised where needed while allowing summary address information to be advertised where such detailed information is not needed.

    • A method of providing router redundancy within a distributed network of routers, wherein messages are routed within the network based on virtual router identifiers, involves organizing the routers into one or more redundancy groups; assigning a physical identifier to each router in each of the redundancy groups; assigning one or more virtual identifiers to each redundancy group; selecting one of the routers of a particular redundancy group as a currently active router associated with a particular virtual identifier assigned to that redundancy group; advertising among the distributed network of routers for each redundancy group the physical identifier for the active router and information enabling other routers to determine the virtual identifier with which the currently active router is associated; and forwarding messages destined for a particular virtual router identifier to the currently active router based on the physical identifier of the currently active router.

    • A method and apparatus are provided for emulating VPLS within an ATM network. Provider Edge devices are configured for the VPLS connections. Each provider edge device advertises its configured VPLS IDs to other provider edge devices by propagating an information group up the PNNI hierarchy, the information group containing an association between an ATM address of the provider edge device and the VPLS ID. Information groups are propagated back down the PNNI hierarchy, so that each lowest level node learns all ATM addresses to be associated with each VPLS ID. For each pair of provider edge devices supporting the same VPLS ID, one of the provider edge devices establishes a virtual circuit between the pair. In this way, a mesh of virtual circuits is established between provider edge devices, and a VPLS-like service can be offered to users without having to implement MPLS. The method of advertising ATM addresses can also be applied to other services requiring a number of interconnections between provider edge devices, such as Virtual Private Networks.

    • A method for optimizing an established call routed across a network from an originating exchange to a destination exchange over a first connection path. The first connection path features a path metric of interest, such as administrative weight. A second connection path is identified which features an improved path metric, the path is made operative and the call is directed over the second connection path. Thereafter, the first connection path may be dismantled. The second connection path is preferably identified by signalling a call set-up message over the network, wherein the message incorporates a reporting field and each transiting exchange propagating the message updates the reporting field until it specifies the path metric of the replacement connection path traversed by the call set-up message. A connect message incorporating the reporting field back is signalled back to the originating exchange from the destination exchange. If the reporting field specifies an improved path metric the replacement connection path is then identified; otherwise the process may be repeated until such time as the second path is found. Alternatively, if the call set-up message includes a desired connection path metric value and the network is configured to clear back the call set-up message to the originating exchange in the event it is unable to identify any connection path to the destination exchange satisfying the desired path metric, the replacement connection path may be automatically accepted.

    • A virtual circuit whose path across a network is specified by a human operator (hereinafter operator directed route or ODR VC) is established by manually provisioning a preferred path for the connection, including a source node, destination node, and intermediate nodes or subnetworks therebetween. The source node creates a call setup message which is signalled along the preferred path, whereby the intermediate nodes along the preferred path establish the bearer channel cross-connects. The operator also specifies a re-muting scheme for the ODR VC in the event the preferred path is blocked or a link subsequently fails. The re-routing scheme includes one of (a) the preferred path only; (b) at least one manually provisioned alternate path; and (c) any available path. The ODR VC provides the benefit of a permanent virtual circuit (PVC) in terms of the ability to consciously route a connection with the benefit of a soft permanent virtual circuit (SPVC) or switched virtual circuit (SVC) in terms of the capability to efficiently re-route connections by the network as opposed to a central management authority.
