An exemplary method involves: (i) making a determination that a wireless communication device (WCD) should be paged, (ii) in response, selecting one or more coverage areas for an initial page attempt to the WCD, wherein the selected coverage areas are selected from recent-response list that indicates coverage areas via which a page response message was recently received from the WCD, and wherein selecting the coverage areas comprises, for each coverage area from the recent-response list, using both (a) a paging success rate for the coverage area and (b) a paging-channel occupancy of the coverage area as a basis for determining whether or not to select the coverage area for the initial page attempt, and (iii) initiating the initial page attempt to the WCD in the one or more selected coverage areas.

An exemplary method involves a switch determining that a WCD should be paged and responsive to determining that the WCD should be paged: (a) determining a coverage-area performance indicator for a last-known coverage area of the WCD; (b) determining a WCD performance indicator for the WCD; (c) using both (i) the WCD performance indicator and (ii) the coverage-area performance indicator as a basis for adjusting at least one paging-scheme setting affecting attempts to page the WCD; and (d) paging the WCD according to the at least one adjusted paging-scheme setting.

    • A radio access network (RAN) may limit the number of channel assignment messages that it transmits to a wireless communication device (WCD) when the quality of one or more wireless coverage areas available to the WCD is impaired. For example, if the paging channel utilization of a given wireless coverage area is high, or if the WCD receives a signal strength from the given wireless coverage area that is low, the RAN may refrain from transmitting a channel assignment message via the given wireless coverage area. Similarly, if the aggregate paging channel utilization of a plurality of such wireless coverage areas is high, or if the WCD receives an aggregate signal strength from the one or more wireless coverage areas that is high, the RAN may transmit channel assignment messages via a limited number of wireless coverage areas.

    • In one aspect, an exemplary method involves a WCD: (i) determining a likelihood of roaming, wherein the likelihood of roaming indicates a likelihood that the WCD will be handed off from a preferred coverage area to a non-preferred coverage area; and (ii) using the likelihood of roaming as a basis for managing an active set of the WCD. In particular, the WCD may manage its active set by setting at least one active-set parameter affecting the number of active sectors in an active set of the WCD, and then maintaining its active set according to the setting of the at least one active-set parameter. According to an exemplary embodiment, a WCD will make an effort to increase the number of sectors in its active set when the likelihood of roaming is greater, and vice versa.

    • Embodiments disclosed herein provide systems and methods for determining whether a wireless device should retransmit data packets based on the condition of a reverse wireless link. In a particular embodiment, a method provides exchanging wireless data packet communications between a wireless device and an access node on a wireless network. The method further provides transmitting a first packet set from the access node to the wireless device on a forward wireless link. The method further provides determining a reverse noise ratio, signal interference noise ratio, and packet error rate on a reverse wireless link and generating a confidence level indicator based on the reverse noise ratio, signal interference noise ratio, and packet error rate. The method further provides determining whether to retransmit the first packet set from the access node to the wireless device based on the confidence level indicator.
