    • An apparatus and a method for performing hitless switching between optical transmission lines such as optical fiber circuits are provided. An optical switch or optical switching network having input terminals and output terminals for selecting optical signals inputted to the input terminals to the output terminals with a selection ratio which can be varied continuously is used. An optical signal converter for generating an optical signal of light which does not interfere with another optical signal is attached to the optical switch. Further, a signal loop interconnecting one of the output terminals of the switch and the input of the optical signal converter is provided. When hitless switching between two optical transmission lines is performed, the same information signal is first inputted to the two transmission lines on the transmission side, then the optical signal from the two lines are transmitted to one of the output terminal (aimed output terminal) of the switch and another output terminal connected to the signal loop. The phase difference between the optical signals is detected and adjusted, and the optical switch is controlled so that the optical signal to be selected at the aimed output terminal is varied to the signal passing through the signal loop.

    • In an optical cross-connect system, incoming and outgoing fiber optic trunks carrying WTDM signals are terminated to first inlet ports and first outlet ports of an optical space switch. A wavelength division demultiplexer is connected to a second outlet port of the optical space switch and a wavelength division multiplexer is connected to a second inlet port of the optical space switch. A wavelength-divided space switch has first inlet ports connected to the outputs of the wavelength division demultiplexer and first outlet ports connected to the inputs of the wavelength division multiplexer. A time division demultiplexer is connected to a second outlet port of the wavelength-divided space switch and a time division multiplexer is connected to a second inlet port of the wavelength-divided space switch. The outputs of the time division demultiplexer are connected to first inlet ports of a time switch and the inputs of the time division multiplexer are connected to first outlet ports of the time switch. The time switch has second inlet ports and second outlet ports connected to a switched network.

    • An optical switch device includes an integrated space switch section and a wavelength switch section which reduces, a packaging volume and cost. The optical switch device includes a plurality of multi-functional wavelength converters. One of these converters includes a wavelength converter 121, in which an input terminal and an output terminal are connected to optical divider 131 and opticalcoupler 141, respectively, is operated as the wavelength converter only when a current flows through a semiconductor optical amplifier in the wavelength converter. When the current does not flow through the amplifier, the light is not outputted. By turning on/off the current flowing through the semiconductor optical amplifier in the wavelength converter, wavelength converter 121 can functions as a gate switch. The switch device has both of a wavelength conversion function and a space switch function. Wavelength converters 121-123 connected to one optical divider 131 are connected to different opticalcouplers 141-143, respectively, whereby the device can also have a wavelength multiplexing function.
