    • A method and apparatus is provided for improving bandwidth usage in a cellular communication network serving at least one mobile terminal, the network being arranged to use a predefined bandwidth range. The apparatus includes a base band unit for capable of supporting at least a first radio access technology and a second radio access technology, a counting means for determining the number of mobile terminals within a cell of the first radio access technology supporting the second radio access technology and a measuring means for determining the level of traffic carried by the first radio access technology cell. Bandwidth assignment means are also provided so that the bandwidth assigned to GSM and LTE can be configured to take account of changes in the traffic levels and device capabilities in either RAT.

    • In order to transmit data packets in multi-RAT networks, a method and system of network controllers are provided including simultaneous establishment of radio connections over multiple different Radio Access Technologies or RATs, with User Equipment or UE 13, being one radio connection firstly established over one primary RAT under a single PDP context and one or more radio connections established over at least one secondary RAT, different from the primary RAT, and under the same single PDP context; simultaneous transmission of data packets over the different RATs towards the UE 13 and combination of the transmitted data by higher layer protocols at the UE 13. In the present method/system, a connection is established for user plane transmission on the same PDP context between a primary network controller 11 of the primary RAT and the secondary network controller 12 of a secondary RAT. More than one secondary RAT may be involved.

    • A telecommunications system is described which allows a push-to-talk: over cellular (PoC) communication session to be established between PoC Clients comprised in respective mobile terminals (1A, 1A′, 1B). The PoC Clients form a group of devices between which a PoC communication session is established. A single controlling PoC function (22B) controls the admission of new members to the PoC communication session and the removal of members from the PoC communication session. Each PoC Client communicates with the PoC controlling function (22B) via a respective PoC participating function (20A, 20A′, 20B). In accordance with an advantageous feature of the embodiment described, the controlling PoC function (22B) issues a Talk Burst Granted message having a modified form to a PoC Client (via its associated PoC participating function) when that client is given permission to transmit a talk burst. The modified Talk Burst Granted message includes an indication of the number of active members in the PoC communication session. This information is extracted by the relevant PoC participating function and enables that PoC participating function to determine the number of PoC Clients to which the talk burst originating from its PoC Client will be transmitted. This enables the PoC participating function to provide an indication to its PoC Client of the number of PoC Clients to which its talk bursts will be transmitted and/or to cause a charge to be rendered to the user of its PoC Client in accordance with the number of recipients.
