A backlight unit 12 includes an LED board 18 having LEDs 17, a chassis 14, a light guide member 19 having an end portion arranged to face the LEDs 17, a power supply board 21 arranged outside the chassis 14 and supplying drive power to the LEDs 17, and a connector 20 mounted to the chassis 14 and supplying power between the power supply board 21 and the LEDs 17. The connector 20 includes an LED board supporting portion 20a that supports the LED board 18, a power supply board supporting portion 20b having a plate surface along which the power supply board 21 is inserted into and removed from and that supports the inserted power supply board 21, and a connection terminal 28 that comes in contact with the power supply board 21 with allowing relative slide in an inserting and removing direction of the power supply board 21.

    • A lighting device includes a light source lamp, and a light-diffusing layer including a diffusing plate or a diffusing sheet, the light source lamp including a folded portion (curved portion), such as U-shaped tube, and the lighting device for display devices having any of, or a combination of: the folded portion of the light source lamp is covered with a lamp frame; an optical member provided with a light-reducing or light-shielding treatment is around the folded portion of the light source lamp; the folded portion of the light source lamp is outside an effective display region; the folded portion of the light source lamp includes a member reducing or shielding light; and a reflective member with a light-reducing treatment around the folded portion of the light source lamp. As a result, at least part of light generated from the curved portion of the light source lamp is reduced or shielded.

    • In a display device, the chromaticity of display images is properly corrected while the brightness is maintained at a high level. A liquid crystal display device 10, 50 according to the present invention includes a liquid crystal panel 11 and a backlight device. The liquid crystal panel 11 includes a pair of substrates 11a and 11b and a liquid crystal layer 11c containing substances having optical characteristics that varies according to an application of electric field. The lighting device includes LEDs 24 or cold cathode tubes 55 as light sources. The lighting device is configured to illuminate the liquid crystal panel 11. On one of the substrates 11a and 11b, color filters 19 including R, G, B, Y color portions in red, green, blue and yellow, respectively, are formed. Each of the R color portion and the B color portion has an area relatively larger than an area of each of the Y color portion and the G color portion.

    • An object is to improve a reliability of an electrical connection in a lighting device.     • A backlight unit 24 of the present invention includes an LED light source 28, a light guide plate 20 and a lens member 26. The light guide plate 20 is configured to guide light that enters a light entrance surface 20a from the LED light source 28. The light entrance surface 20a has an elongated shape on the side surface thereof. The lens member 26 covers a light exit side of the LED light source 28 and is configured to diffuse light from the LED light source 28. The lens member 26 faces the light entrance surface 20a of the light guide plate 20 and is curved in the long-side direction of the light entrance surface 20a such that the lens member 26 bulges out toward the light guide plate 20 in a convex manner. The lens member 26 spreads light emitted from the LED light source 28 in the long-side direction of the light entrance surface 20a. This reduces a dark portion formed in the light entrance surface of the light guide plate 20.
