    • A display apparatus to receive a picture signal containing information of a picture and to process the picture signal using at least an area distinguishing the picture from another picture includes a motion detector to detect whether there is a motion in the area of the picture signal, a hysteresis generator to output hysteresis information on each area according to a detected result of the motion detector from a previous frame up to a current frame, a moving picture detector to detect whether the picture signal is a moving picture signal or a still picture signal in the area on the basis of the hysteresis information, and a gradation level converter to convert the picture signal corresponding to the area into either a group of gradation levels for a moving picture to display the moving picture signal or a group of gradation levels for a still picture to display the still picture signal according to a detecting result of the moving picture detector. With this configuration, a false contour of a moving picture signal can be attenuated, thereby minimizing a flicker.

    • A motion estimator and motion extracting method are provided for dividing a current frame into a plurality of blocks and estimating a motion comparing a current block with a previous frame. The motion estimator includes a mean motion estimation unit for computing a mean motion vector based on motion vectors of surrounding blocks adjacent to the current block, a line motion generation unit for generating a line motion vector in a predetermined search area based on motion vectors of horizontal blocks of the current block, and a motion vector selection unit for selecting and outputting one of the mean motion vector and the line motion vector as a final motion vector of the current block based on a mean motion expectation error value in accordance with the mean motion vector and a line motion expectation error value in accordance with the line motion vector.

    • A motion type decision apparatus and method thereof are provided. A first decision unit determines the presence of motion in a current block for compensation, by extracting first and second high frequency signals from first and second blocks of a previous and a current frame/fields corresponding to a zero motion vector of the current block to set a first threshold, and comparing a first motion estimation error value between the first and the second blocks with the first threshold. A second decision unit determines the presence of motion in the current block, by extracting third and fourth high frequency signals from third and fourth blocks, setting a second threshold, and comparing a second motion estimation error value with the second threshold. A motion type decision unit determines a motion type of the current block by comparing the motion determinations of the first and the second decision units.
