    • The present invention relates to a heat, flame, and electric arc resistant fabric (1) for use as single or outer layer of protective garments. The fabric (1) of the invention comprises at least two separate single plies which are assembled together at predefined positions so as to build pockets (4). The fabric (1) of the invention is made of materials independently chosen from the group consisting of aramid fibers and filaments, polybenzimidazol fibers and filaments, polyamidimid fibers and filaments, poly(paraphephenylene benzobisaxazole) fibers and filaments, phenol-formaldehyde fibers and filaments, melamine fibers and filaments, natural fibers and filaments, synthetic fibers and filaments, artificial fibers and filaments, glass fibers and filaments, carbon fibers and filaments, metal fibers and filaments, and composites thereof. Due to its peculiar structure, the fabric (1) according to the present invention can have a specific weight which is considerably lower than that of known fabrics having comparable mechanical and thermal properties.

    • A thermally-resistant composite fabric sheet for use as single or outer layer of protective garments, comprises inside and outside fabric layers (B,A) joined together by an array of connection lines (12,22,32) arranged so that the inside layer forms bubble-like pockets (16) when the outside layer (A) is caused to shrink by the external application of intense heat. The array of connection lines (12,22,32) is constituted by a plurality of isolated single connection lines (22) and/or by a plurality of isolated groups of connection lines (12,32), for example forming a series of Y or V shapes. The connection lines are arranged at different angles and are spaced apart from one another to leave gaps (42) where the two layers (A,B) are not connected to one another. These gaps (42) unite a continuous expanse (40) of the two unconnected layers that surrounds each isolated connection line (22) or group of connection lines (12,32). This continuous expanse (40) has a labyrinth-like structure delimited by the connection lines (12,22,32) at different angles, such that when a given area of the outside layer (A) is subjected to intense heat resulting in thermal shrinkage the inside layer (B) forms under the given area a series of self-closing bubble-like pockets (16) that form individually in discrete areas of the continuous expanse (40) between the connecting lines (12,22,32) and that are inhibited by the labyrinth-like structure from propagating along or across the sheet.

    • A substantially torqueless composite dual core-spun yarn (10) has a substantially inelastic central hard core (20) covered with a dual-spun fiber covering (30). The central hard core (20) has an elongation at break less than 50% and a Z or S twist, and the fiber covering (30) comprises fibers twisted on the core (20) with an S or Z twist opposite to that of the core. The opposite twists of the core (20) and of the covering (30) exert opposite and substantially equal torques. This yarn is produced by introducing two slivers (30A,30B) forming the covering (30) and a central (30) core in a spinning triangle (40). The core (20) is fed overtwisted S or Z and the slivers (30A,30B) have an opposite Z or S twist corresponding to about 30% to 70% of the twist of the fed overtwisted core (20) that detwists during spinning. The inelastic core (20) is fed at controlled speed to compensate for the angle of feed and to compensate for detwisting, and is guided into the spinning triangle (40) by a guide groove (52) in a feed roller (50).
