    • A method and system for allowing a user to interface to an interactive voice response system via natural language commands. The system plays a prompt that initiates user interaction. In certain embodiments, the system detects initial user speech, wherein the initial user speech begins during the prompt or during a silence after the prompt. Then, the system determines whether the user speech restarts (second user speech) within a predetermined time period, wherein the predetermined time period is dependent upon whether the initial user speech began during the prompt or during the silence. If the user speech does restart, then the system uses the second user speech for recognition purposes. If the user speech does not restart, then the system uses the initial user speech for recognition purposes.

    • A method for managing interactive dialog between a machine and a user. In one embodiment, an interaction between the machine and the user is managed by determining at least one likelihood value which is dependent upon a possible speech onset of the user. In another embodiment, the likelihood value can be dependent on a model of a desire of the user for specific items, a model of an attention of the user to specific items, or a model of turn-taking cues. The values can be used to determine a mode confidence value that is used by the system to determine the nature of prompts provided to the user.

    • A mapping system is movable over a terrain and operates to generate a map. The mapping system includes a geographical location unit generating location data, a timer generating time data, a pair of different interfaces for inputting flag data, such as a speech interface and a manual interface. The system also includes a processing unit connected to the geographical location unit and to the interfaces. The processing unit has a stored first delay time corresponding to the speech interface and having a stored second delay time corresponding to the manual interface. The second delay time is longer than the first delay time. The processing unit stores current time data and flag data in response to use of a selected one of the interfaces. The processing unit generates compensated time data as a function of the current time data and the delay time corresponding to the selected interface. The processing unit generates compensated location data as a function of the compensated time data. The processing unit stores the inputted flag data in association with the compensated location data.

    • A method is claimed for managing interactive dialog between a machine and a user. In one embodiment, an interaction between the machine and the user is managed in response to a timing position of possible speech onset from the user. In another embodiment, the interaction between the machine and the user is dependent upon the timing of a recognition result, which is relative to a cessation of a verbalization of a desired sequence from the machine. In another embodiment, the interaction between the machine and the user is dependent upon a recognition result and whether the desired sequence was ceased or not ceased.
