    • An apparatus is described for managing mobile network services. The apparatus includes a service authorization and utilization control function (SAUCF) element configured to authorize a mobile network service request by acting as a service manager configured to centrally coordinate service authorizations for multiple network services associated with an individual subscriber account by evaluating a service policy defining user access spanning the multiple network services. The service policy includes (a) communication authorization controls affecting permission for a user associated with the subscriber account to access a mobile network service in accordance with one or more criteria applicable to a bundled service category; and (b) charging controls for determining whether a subscriber account includes sufficient credits to use the mobile network service. A real time utilization interface is configured to transmit messages between the SAUCF element and a subscriber service utilization account.

    • Aspects of the invention allow mobile network users as well as mobile network providers to define policies that are managed across several applications and services. Thus, several application servers and network elements are coordinated to implement a service policy. More specifically, aspects of the invention define service level policies for any service be within an IMS based or non-IMS based wireless network implemented by SIP or non-SIP network elements.A service policy is a set of rules that is applied when a subscriber uses a specific service (Web Browsing, Location, Presence, MMS, SMS, PoC, etc). The policy may be applicable on a per-need, per-subscriber basis. A service policy enhances or restricts use of the service functionality by the subscriber. A service level policy should also allow definition of service utilization rules that constrain how the service may be used by the subscriber. For example, a parent may restrict the use of her child's cell phone for all voice and messaging type communication to only one hour per day between the time of 12 noon to 1 pm and 4 pm to 6 pm. Thus, aspects of the inventions allow mobile service subscribers to receive a level of customization for services rendered by a mobile network service provider. Further, mobile network service providers may provide not only custom service to subscribers but also simplifies the provisioning by allowing a single-point of configuration for subscriber based service control policies.Service level policies have wider scope than bearer level policies such as quality of service in the form of on-demand bandwidth, committed rates of throughput, committed reduction in delay/jitter/latency.

    • A system and method are described whereby an IP telemetry gateway is hosted by an MVNO in order to relay the telemetry information between remote devices located in an IP network and telemetry servers operated by legacy telemetry customers. In an embodiment, the IP network is a CDMA2000 1X wireless network. Once the IP network identifies a device as part of the telemetry network, it assigns such device a static private IP address. A VPN connection is used to extend the private network of remote devices to the IP telemetry gateway. The IP telemetry gateway maps each remote device's legacy address to its corresponding IP address in order to communicate with the legacy servers and the wireless network via circuit switched and packet data connections respectively. Preferably, the remote devices maintain an always on data connection to allow the telemetry servers to address the remote devices at any time.

    • A femto cell is provided that automatically routes new communication sessions among the connected mobile and landline handsets based upon local detection of mobile registration with the femto cell, which helps to reduce the backhaul bandwidth requirements and offload backend network processing load. When the mobile handset successfully registers with the femto cell, a User Detection Module at the femto cell routes new calls destined for the mobile telephone number to one or more traditional landline handsets. The femto cell also provides a ring tone to the connected landline handsets for making the outgoing calls. Since the mobile handset remains available for conducting additional communication sessions, the user is able to talk on the landline handset while conducting a simultaneous data session using the mobile phone.

To prevent mobile applications from running when the access conditions are not suitable, the mobile device includes a policy database used to store a list of access conditions that are inappropriate for launching the installed applications. The access conditions are based on the type of the current access network used by the mobile device for launching or maintaining the requested application session. The access conditions indicate whether the mobile device is currently accessing its home network or roaming on another provider's network. Similarly, the access conditions indicate the type of network access interface used by the current network to provide the data connection necessary to run the requested application. The policy database correlates predetermined actions with the access conditions associated with a given application session.

    • The described embodiments include a system for controlling communications between a first network and a second network including a plurality of in-line security devices, the in-line security devices being configured to manage communication between the first network and the second network, and including a state server connected to the plurality of in-line security devices, the state server being configured to receive state information about the state of the connections established by a first one of the in-line security devices and to communicate the state information to at least a second one of said in-line security devices. In one embodiment, the in-line security devices are firewalls. In another embodiment, state server communicates the state information received from the first one of the firewall devices and communicates the state information to every other one of the plurality of firewall devices. The described embodiments also include a method for controlling communications between a first network and a second network including providing a plurality of in-line security devices, establishing communication between the first network and the second network via the in-line security devices, providing a state server connected to the plurality of in-line security devices, transmitting state information from a first one of the the in-line security devices about the state of the connections established by the a first one of the in-line security devices, and communicating the state information from the state server to at least a second one of said in-line security devices.
