摘要： The invention discloses a method (800) for use in a cellular wireless system (100) with a base station (120), a cell (110) in the system and a first user terminal (130) which can be scheduled for receiving traffic from the base station during a down link period, and for transmitting traffic to the base station during an up link period. There is a first guard period (TUD) between the up link period and the down link period, and a second guard period (TDU) between the down link period and the up link period. The method (800) comprises measuring the interference level in the cell for part of the time between two consecutive down link periods, and varying at least one of the following in accordance with the measured interference level: the duration of the first or second guard period, the duration of the up link period, or the traffic sent in the up link period.

This is done by designing the base stations to regularly act as a terminal, contact its neighboring base stations and as a mobile perform a set of typical traffic cases. From the outcome of the traffic cases the probing base station detects neighboring base stations that cannot carry traffic. The information about sleeping cells is subsequently communicated from the base station to the operation and maintenance system.

The common control data and the operator-specific data may comprise values for one or more mobile terminal settings, wherein the operator-specific values are for use instead of the common values by those of the mobile terminals that are associated with the first mobile operator. Methods and apparatus for using and generating the disclosed propagated control channel signals are also disclosed.

In an exemplary method, a mobile station maintains a high-priority neighbor cell list and a low-priority neighbor cell list, each list comprising one or more neighbor cell entries corresponding to candidate cells for handover. Signal strength measurements for candidate cells in the high-priority list are made according to a first measurement schedule, while signal strength measurements for candidate cells in the low-priority list are made according to a second measurement schedule. In one or more embodiments, the low-priority cells are measured less frequently than the high-priority neighbor cells.
