    • The application relates to the field of communications and more particularly to an apparatus and method of generating a new event from a document. In accordance with one aspect of the present application, recognized date/time references contained in a document allow a new event to be created. Such date/time references are automatically recognized and highlighted in the document. Selecting the highlighted information generates a menu selection, offering a user the ability to create a new event into which the date/time information will be inserted, along with other information extracted from the document. Specific date/time information in a document is simply correlated to a known date/time format in a lookup table, while relative terms like “tomorrow”, “today” or days of the week (ie. Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, etc.) are recognized by a date/time detector module and translated into a specific date/time. Using an embodiment of the present application, a new event can be readily generated.

The method comprises generating and providing a message on a display of the device indicating receipt of an inbound communication, after determining that the device is to receive the inbound communication while the device is composing an outbound communication and after determining the inbound communication is related to the outbound communication by an analysis of information of the inbound communication against information of the outbound communication. The message provides options for processing the inbound communication depending on whether the outbound communication is initiated as either a reply to the inbound communication or a forwarding of the inbound communication.

    • A handheld electronic device that includes a display screen located above a trackball-based user input device is disclosed. At least one sensor is operatively associated with the trackball and configured to sense motion induced in the trackball when the trackball is rotated by substantially circular motion applied about an exposed portion of the trackball. The sensor is further configured to output electronic data representative of the sensed induced trackball motion. A microprocessor receives the output electronic data from the at least one sensor as input data and processes the input data into cursor guidance instructions. These cursor guidance instructions are outputted to the display screen and affect one-dimensional, substantially continuous cursor movement on the display screen in correspondence with the sensed trackball motion.
