    • A subchannel within a CDMA signal is provided together with a system for receiving and decoding this subchannel. A message is transmitted over the subchannel by applying a sequence of phase rotations to the user data. A single subchannel message can be transmitted during each 1.25 ms segment of user data, resulting in a transmission rates of up to 800 messages per second over the subchannel. Each message corresponds to a fixed sequence of phases, called a phase codeword, used to rotate the user data each time that message is sent. When only two phase codewords are used, the effective data rate for the subchannel is 800 bits per second, but higher data rates may be achieved by increasing the number of codewords used by the subchannel. The subchannel may be decoded by correlating the user data with each of the possible phase codewords.

    • The transmitted power of a mobile telephone is established by power control bits that are transmitted in a traffic channel from a base station and that are demodulated by a rake receiver in the telephone. The rake receiver includes a plurality of demodulators that demodulate respective fingers of the traffic channel which may be caused by multipath conditions, with the power control bits from each demodulator being combined with the power control bits of the other demodulators in the rake receiver regardless of whether the demodulators are in lock with their respective fingers. The combined power control signal from a rake receiver associated with a first base station is then tested against a threshold. If the combined power is at least equal to the threshold, the combined power control signal is sent to a logic combiner. If other base stations are communicating with the mobile telephone, the combined power control signal from each of these other base stations is also sent to the logic combiner. If any power control signal commands the mobile telephone to decrease its transmitted power, it does so; otherwise, it increases its transmitted power. Alternatively, the power control bits from each demodulator in a rake receiver can be blocked if the finger energy falls below a threshold that depends on the number of fingers from the associated base station.

    • A method and apparatus for minimizing the amount of time that a mobile station is to be out of communication with an “origination” base station while searching for a suitable system to which to perform a mobile station assisted hard handoff. After being directed to search for pilot signals in an alternate frequency band, the mobile station tunes to that alternate frequency and samples the incoming data, storing those samples in memory. When a sufficient number of samples have been stored, the mobile station retunes to the origination frequency. The forward link data is again received by the mobile station, and reverse link data can be successfully transmitted to the origination base station. After retuning to the origination frequency, a searcher in the mobile station will subsequently be employed to search for pilot signal offsets utilizing the stored data collected from the alternate frequency.

    • A forward link power control mechanism measures the reverse link power control bits which are transmitted on the forward traffic channel. At the remote station, the reverse link power control bits from multiples base stations or multiple signal paths are measured, combined, and filtered to yield an improved measurement of the forward link signal quality. The reverse link power control bits which are deemed unreliable are omitted from use in the power control loop. The remote station generates a set of forward link power control bit in accordance with the measurements and transmits these bits to all base stations in communication with the remote station. Each base station adjusts its gain of the forward traffic channel in accordance to its measurement of the forward link power control bit. However, the gains of the forward traffic channels of the base stations are corrected periodically so that erroneous reception of the forward link power control bits by the base stations do not accumulate.
