    • A TV compatible infrared imaging system employs horizontal and vertical oscillating scan mirrors which are driven in synchronism. The horizontal mirror oscillates at a fraction of the usual television horizontal scan rate while the vertical mirror is driven at the usual TV field rate. As the mirrors oscillate, the system scans back and forth across the scene being viewed, the radiation from that scene being imaged on an infrared detector. The radiance patterns from each oscillatory scanned horizontal line pair, one sweeping from left to right and the other sweeping from right to left are converted by a "line converter" to a pair of constant rate horizontal lines sweeping from left to right so that the output of the system can be applied directly to a conventional television recorder or receiver. Radiometric calibration of any point in the scene is achieved by sampling the incident radiation when the system is scanning that particular point within the scene and comparing it with the known temperature of a shutter placed momentarily in the optical path. The system also includes infrared optics optionally placed in the optical path to adapt the instrument to telescopic and microscopic applications.

    • A dual-mode resonant scanning system comprising an electronic control circuit and a dual-mode resonant mechanical scanner to produce an essentially triangular scan pattern. The dual-mode mechanical scanner is mechanically tuned to simultaneously oscillate at a predetermined third harmonic frequency and the free running fundamental thereof. The electronic control circuit drives the mechanical scanner to oscillate at the exact fundamental frequency of the predetermined third harmonic frequency and phase locks the fundamental oscillation to the third harmonic oscillation. The dual-mode resonant mechanical scanner includes an optical scanning element having a first mass, a second mass, at least one torsion rod, a rotational actuator and a mechanical ground designed and integrated together such that the mechanical scanner is self resonant at the predetermined third harmonic frequency and at or within a few hertz of the exact fundamental frequency of the predetermined third harmonic frequency. The electronic control circuit includes a mirror-position sensing subsystem, a bandpass filter tuned to the predetermined third harmonic frequency, a divider circuit, a summing circuit, a manual phase and amplitude adjustment, a scan angle automatic gain control circuit and a driving circuit. The exact fundamental oscillation in combination with the third harmonic oscillation produces an essentially constant scan rate through a predetermined scan angle.

    • A radiation scanning system comprises scan mirrors optically coupled together by means of a spherical reflector to relay the scan mirror pupils through the optical path with minimal pupil shift for both wide and narrow field-of-view applications. The mirrors may oscillate at a predetermined fundamental frequency and a hamonic thereof to achieve near linear line scans or both line scan mirrors may oscillate at the predetermined fundamental frequency to achieve wider scan angles. In another embodiment, a line scan mirror is mounted on a multi-mode resonant scanner and phase lock oscillated at multiple frequencies while a second scan mirror functions as the field or line scanning element. In yet another embodiment, one line scan mirror is mounted on a non-turnable resonant scanner while a second scan mirror functions as the field scanning element. General compatibility with TV formatted systems can be achieved through self resonance or by controlling the fundamental line scan frequency through an external master clock. The line scan mirrors can operate at a predetermined fundamental frequency which is a fraction of the standard TV line frequency. System scanners may be passive, active or combinations thereof, and can operate in the ultraviolet, visible, or infrared spectrums.
