    • A communication apparatus includes a mechanism for preventing demodulation of text telephone information during reception of a poor quality signal. In one embodiment, the communication apparatus includes a receiver including a demodulator unit configured to receive a signal including a plurality of text telephone symbols. The demodulator unit may be configured to generate a soft decision based upon a frequency and an energy value of each received text telephone symbol. The demodulator unit may be configured to receive a notification that indicates the signal is unusable. In response to receiving the notification, the demodulator unit may be further configured to generate predetermined information that is independent of the plurality of text telephone symbols.

    • In one embodiment, the present invention includes a method for maintaining a vocoder and channel codec in substantial synchronization. The method may include receiving a configuration message that includes rate information and an effective radio block identifier at a mobile station, coding a current radio block via a vocoder and channel codec, configuring an encoding portion of the vocoder and channel codec with the rate information after performing the coding, and then coding the effective radio block using the rate information. Other embodiments are described and claimed.

    • A wireless communication apparatus includes a mechanism for estimating carrier-to-interference (C/I) ratio using a variable bandwidth filter. More particularly, the wireless communication apparatus includes a channel equalization unit coupled to a C/I ratio estimation unit. The channel equalization unit may be configured to calculate instantaneous carrier-to-interference (C/I) ratio values of a received signal. In addition, the C/I ratio estimation unit may be configured to calculate a C/I ratio estimate by filtering successive ones of the instantaneous C/I ratio values. The C/I ratio estimation unit may also be configured to determine whether a transmitter of the signal is transmitting voice data in a voice channel of the signal. The C/I ratio estimation unit may be further configured to inhibit the filtering in response to determining the transmitter of the signal is not transmitting the voice data such as during DTX mode, for example.
