In the embodiments, the network adapter can provide a first power outlet, a powerline network adapter, and a wireless access point. The first power outlet serves as a replacement for the outlet consumed by the powerline network adapter and is filtered to reduce or prevent interference with network communications being carried over the powerline. The network adapter is also configurable to provide, among other things, a powerline wired Ethernet interface and a wireless access point that is coupled to the powerline. Furthermore, the network adapter may be configured to provide a second power outlet for a device, such as an external drive. For example, the second power outlet may be an AC/DC 12-Volt power adapter. In some embodiments, this second power outlet is also filtered from the first power outlet.

In particular, the embodiments enable a device, such as a direct attached storage device coupled to a host, to enter into a mode that consumes less power. In one embodiment, the mode is self-initiated and triggered based on a preset timeout of non-use or other condition. Alternatively, this reduced power mode may be initiated based on a request by the host. During the reduced power mode of operation, the device may continue to appear active or on-line to its host. However, if its non-use persists, the device may employ a progression of power saving actions. If needed by the host, the direct attached storage device is configured to respond as if it were on-line and reverse one or more of the progression of power saving actions.

摘要： The present invention relates to providing reliable power to a storage device. In one embodiment, the storage device employs dual external power supplies. The power supplies may both provide power to the storage device. Alternatively, the power supplies may provide power in different configurations. One power supply may be a primary supply providing all or a majority of power, while the other power supply may be a backup. The storage device may comprise high efficiency DC-to-DC converters to permit the use of lower power-rated external power supplies. A staggered startup procedure by the storage device may be implemented to manage peak power draw. The storage device may be further configured to load balance and power share between the external power supplies. In addition, the storage device is configured to monitor the status of the external power supplies and send a notification if one or more of the power supplies fails.

In one embodiment, the storage device is configured with a secured user area and an unlocking mechanism for access to the secured user area. The storage device may comprise a translation module having a bridge that presents multiple logical units to a host. In addition, the storage device may comprise a controller having its own encryption engine to encrypt the entire user area of the storage media. In one embodiment, the storage device presents the unlocking mechanism via a second logical device as a read-only device, such as a CD/DVD-ROM, or virtual CD device. The secondary logical device comprises executable code, which allows the user, for example, to enter, change, or remove the password and unlock the user area.
