    • A user interface generation device includes: a generation unit which generates a user interface for instructing an execution unit to execute a function based on an application program; and a storage unit which stores a definition file defining a user interface object and information indicating a display ability of a display unit. The generation unit selects or discards the object definition information and judges whether all the objects can be displayed. If No, the generation unit rewrites the information relating to the object size according to the information in the display unit so that all the objects can be displayed. After this, the generation unit generates a synthesis user interface according to the information.

    • A user interface generation apparatus 1 has an application program execution unit 11, a user interface generation unit 13, a user interface display unit 24, and a memory unit 50 for storing information on characteristics of an apparatus itself as well as object definition information defining objects composing a user interface. The user interface generation unit 13 generates a compound user interface by selecting object definition information stored in the memory unit 50, setting a margin for when the selected object is arranged based on the object definition information and the information on characteristics of the apparatus itself, and arranging the object in a predetermined area of the display unit based on the margin.

    • A cast cylinder head 1 of an internal combustion engine to be mounted on a vehicle has an intake-side side wall 2i, an exhaust-side side wall 2e, and opposite end walls 3r and 3f. The walls 2i, 2e, 3r and 3f define a water jacket 8. A first cooling water exit part 11 and a second cooling water exit part 21 both having a solid structure are formed by casting integrally with one of the intake-side side wall 2i and the exhaust-side side wall 2e and with one of the end walls 3r and 3f, respectively. Cooling water exit openings 15,16 or 25,26 opening into the water jacket 8 are drilled selectively in either of the first cooling water exit part 11 and the second cooling water exit part 21 depending on the engine mounting position on the vehicle. Thus the same cylinder head can be used independently of the mounting orientation of the engine on the vehicle.

    • A variable delay circuit applies a variable delay that corresponds to an analog signal to a reference clock so as to generate a delayed clock. A phase detection unit detects the phase difference between the delayed clock and the reference clock, and generates a phase difference signal having a level that corresponds to the phase difference. A counter performs a counting up operation or a counting down operation according to the level of the phase difference signal. A digital/analog converter converts the count value of the counter into an analog signal, and supplies the count value thus converted to the variable delay circuit. The counter comprises: a first counter configured to use a first thermometer code to count the lower group of digits of the count value according to the phase difference signal; a second counter configured to use a second thermometer code to count an upper group of digits of the count value according to the phase difference signal; and a control circuit configured to perform a control operation such that the Hamming distance is maintained at 1 even in a carry operation and a borrow operation of the first counter and the second counter.
