    • A technique is performed in a first device of a set of devices. The technique involves receiving a query message from a network node, the query message requesting data regarding a network resource. The technique further involves accessing an identifier which indicates whether the first device is in charge of the network resource, and providing a response message to the network node in response to the query message. The response message is provided after waiting a predefined amount of time when the identifier indicates that the first device is not in charge of the network resource and there is reason to believe another device of the set is operating. The response message is provided without waiting the predefined amount of time when the identifier indicates that the first device is in charge of the network resource. Moreover in some situations, the first device may choose to not respond.

    • In accordance with an example embodiment, there is disclosed herein an apparatus comprising an interface, and processing logic coupled with the interface. The processing logic receives via the interface a list of location area codes detected by an access point associated with a site group to be provisioned with a location area code (LAC). The processing logic removes from a predefined list of location area codes the location area codes detected by the access point. The processing logic selects a LAC from the predefined list for the site group after removing the location area codes detected by the access point. The processing logic provisions the access point with the selected LAC via the interface.

    • A technique for synchronizing data caches. Data is maintained in the data caches as records. The records are associated with buckets which represent collections of one or more records. The buckets are collectively maintained in a synchronization set which represents a state of a data cache. A local entity synchronizes its data cache with a remote entity by sending its synchronization set to the remote entity in a synchronization request message. The remote entity compares information contained in the local entity's synchronization set with its own to determine if the two are consistent. If not, the remote entity notes inconsistencies in a response message that is then forwarded to the local entity. The local entity processes the response message including using it to update its data cache to be consistent with the remote entity's data cache.

    • A method is provided in one example and includes establishing a plurality of persistent connections with a plurality of devices at a server; receiving presence data associated with the plurality of devices; responding to heartbeat messages provided by the plurality of devices; receiving a status change notification from a particular one of the devices; and updating status data and heartbeat data for the particular one of the devices. In more particular embodiments, the method includes encoding messages communicated on the persistent connections using an extensible messaging and presence protocol (XMPP). The method may also include communicating script configuration data over a particular one of the persistent connections for execution by the particular device. The persistent connections may be secured using transport layer security (TLS).
