    • The present invention provides broadband multimedia communication over the standard circuit-switched public switched telephone network infrastructure (PSTN) and other physical or virtual circuit-switched infrastructures while simultaneously and transparently interoperating with the public Internet packet-switched infrastructure to effectively merge the capabilities of the two types of infrastructures into a seamless capability that can bring the benefits of using both types of existing switching infrastructures to large groups of users under the control of the same common and simple interface tools such as web browsers. The invention enables users to establish both packet-switched connections for sending or receiving content for which low-latency and unpredictable response times are not a problem (i.e. text, small graphics, e-mail, small file transfers); and circuit-switched connections for sending or receiving content that benefits from streaming data at fixed data rates, without contention for bandwidth from other users during a communication session, (i.e. video, voice, complex graphics and animations, or large file transfers).

The broadband network of the present invention thus mates the convenience of point-and-click on-demand Internet-type packet-switched connectivity with the continuity of a circuit-switch connection, and bundles B channels, or controls connections on virtual circuit switches such as ATM or RSVP for the required bandwidth on-demand for video conferencing and other high-bandwidth applications.

    • A method and apparatus provide reserved bandwidth and QOS/COS virtual circuit connections in a network using both conventional and novel reservation protocols and frame formats. An apparatus according to the invention includes an enterprise control point that communicates with switches via a reserved signaling channel. The switches have been upgraded or replaced to include enhanced functionality. The enhanced switches detect packets that include requests for reserved connections according to existing reservation protocols such as RSVP and IEEE 802.1P/Q. Such detected packets are forwarded to the enterprise control point for processing via a reserved signaling channel. The enterprise control point identifies a path within the network that can satisfy the requested QOS/COS and reserves the requested resources all along the path from beginning to end. A method according to the invention includes detecting packets that include requests for reserved connections according to existing reservation protocols such as RSVP and IEEE 802.1P/Q, forwarding detected packets to an enterprise control point for processing via a reserved signaling channel, identifying a path within the network that can satisfy the requested QOS/COS and reserving the requested resources all along the path from beginning to end.

    • A pay telephone system which does not require the use of dedicated facilities in a telephone company and central office and which provides more efficient means for utilizing existing facilities to place public telephone calls. For only selected user telephone numbers, the telephone system places a set-up call to a call processor to request billing and other information needed to process the call at the local processor. The set-up call is then terminated and the user's call is automatically re-dialed into the switched telephone network from the telephone central office which serves the telephone presently being used. Numbers other than the selected numbers are called directly.

    • A semi-automatic telephone-answering system which connects a voice message to an incoming telephone line upon being activated. The incoming telephone line is connected to the system by an operator switchboard jack or key connector on a multiline telephone. A cueing signal switches a prerecorded message from a source thereof to the incoming telephone line at the beginning of the message. The cueing signal is synchronized with the message source so that switching means can only be activated at the beginning of the message. At the end of the message, a second cueing signal connects a music source or channel to the incoming telephone line. A primary signal indicates that the incoming telephone line has been waiting to be answered by the live operator for a predetermined time. A secondary signal is provided to indicate to the operator that a waiting call is being or has been answered live of a remote location. Thus, an effective urgency is imparted to the live operator as to the more pressing calls. The primary signal can also be transmitted to supervisory personnel to indicate that an overload condition exists in the answering system and allows said supervisor to intervene in calls or to talk on telephone lines, from a remote location, which an operator cannot answer because she is busy with other lines.

    • A method of presenting a unified view of two mailboxes, each mailbox associated with a client is described. The unified view allows the user to see all actions she/he performed on a message in one mailbox performed in all other unified mailboxes. One of the clients has both a high cost, e.g. wireless, communication channel and a low cost, e.g. synchronization, communication channel. When a message is received by a client from its respective mailbox without an identifier, an identifier is generated and a copy of the message is sent to the other mailboxes with the identifier. When the user performs actions on a message with a client, the identifier for the message and the action can be conveyed to the other clients in a message to the other mailboxes. The unified view can be selectably updated either over the high cost communication channel or the low cost communication channel. The presence of two communication channels enables the cost of performing the unification to be contained. The user can select options to control the unification process and the use of the high cost communication channel, e.g. summarize messages over 250 words and/or remove attachments.
