    • The invention relates to a backlighting system (10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16) and to a display device. The backlighting system comprises a plurality of segments (20, 21, 22, 23, 24) for selectively illuminating a predefined area of pixels of a display device. The backlighting system is configured for selectively controlling the intensity and/or color of the light emitted from the segment, each segment comprising a light source (30). The backlighting system (10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16) further comprises light barriers (40) for limiting the lateralspreading of the light emitted by the light source (30) towards the neighboring segments (20, 21, 22, 23, 24). The light barriers define grid-lines of a grid, and the light source (30) is arranged at a position on the grid-line which at least partially coincides with at least one of the light barriers. The effect of the measures according to the invention is that by positioning the light source of the segment on the same grid-line as the light barriers, the light from the light source spreads on either side of the light barrier towards the neighboring segments. This enables a predefined overlap of the light emitted by the segment towards its neighboring segments without the need for additional thickness of the backlighting system.

    • A light guiding layer comprises an optical incoupling structure (3) on which light from a light source (7) is incident, said optical incoupling structure (3) having a slanted surface (15) configured to give the light a first directional distribution by reflecting the light in a first general direction, by total internal reflection within the layer, towards a reflecting structure (5). The reflecting structure (5) is configured to give the light a second directional distribution by reflecting the light in a second general direction towards the optical incoupling structure (3), and at least a part of the light reflected in the second general direction is transmitted through the slanted surface (15) of the optical incoupling structure (3).     • The invention relates to an illumination system (30) for illuminating a display (20) of a display device (10), and to a display device. The illumination system comprises a light source (S1, S2, S3) and an optical control layer (40). The light source emits light via the optical control layer to the display for illuminating a predefined area (A1, A2, A3) on the display. The light is emitted from the light source in a diverging beam in a particular direction (O1, O2, O3) towards the predefined area. The optical control layer comprises an arrangement of portions (46) having a refractive index which is different from the optical control layer. The portions are arranged to reflect a part of the diverging light towards the predefined area. The measures according to the invention have the effect that the arrangement of portions in the optical control layer confines both the light emitted by the light source and the backscattered light reflected back to the light source to substantially within the predefined area.
