    • CW lock is conducted with less manual operation. A first input 22 receives a black burst (BB) signal from a key TV station. A second input 30 receives a continuous wave (CW) signal having an accurate, known frequency. A phase adjust signal generator 24 generates a reset signal having a known phase relationship with regard to the key TV station BB signal. The reset signal is used as a phase adjust signal. A PLL 32 receives the CW signal to provide clock. A counter 34 receives the clock and provides a frame pulse signal for synchronizing the key and local TV signals at a local TV station wherein the BB signal of the local station may be derived from the frame pulse signal. The counter 34 uses the reset signal to adjust the phase relationship between the key TV station BB signal and the frame pulse to a desired phase relationship based upon the key TV station BB signal.

    • A waveform monitor receives HDTV and SDTV signals that are provided to a channel and an external trigger terminal respectively. An HDTV signal processor 14 produces a reference clock PCLK from the HDTV signal. A counter starts counting at the vertical sync signal of the SDTV signal and generates a trigger every time the count of the reference clock PCLK reaches a predetermined number (2,200, for example). This allows generation of a trigger signal which is phase locked to the vertical sync signal of the SDTV signal, and of which the frequency is the same as the horizontal line frequency of the HDTV signal. Therefore the waveform monitor can display the HDTV waveform line by line even though the HDTV and SDTV signals have different numbers of lines per field. The waveform monitor can be used to measure phase difference between television signals of difference formats, such as the HDTV and the SDTV.

    • A circuit for variably delaying a serial digital data signal delays a parallel data clock rather than the serial digital data signal directly. A delay circuit receives the parallel data clock to provide a delayed parallel data clock, the delay being a function of a control signal. A phase-locked loop receives the delayed parallel data clock to generate a serial data clock in phase with the delayed parallel data clock. A parallel-to-serial converter reads an n-bit parallel digital data signal from a memory using the delayed parallel data clock, and converts the parallel digital data signal to the serial digital data signal using the serial data clock. By changing the control signal continuously, the delay of the delayed parallel data clock and of the serial digital data signal also changes continuously so the serial digital data signal appears to have jitter.
