    • A multiband antenna, and component for implementing a multiband antenna for, e.g., a small-sized radio device. In one embodiment, the antenna component comprises a simple and reliable dielectric substrate, the conductive coating of which forms a radiating element. This has a plurality (e.g., two) resonances for forming separate operating bands. The lower resonance is based on the entire element, and the upper resonance on the head part of the element. The conductive coating has a pattern, which functions as a parallel resonance circuit between the head part and the tail part of the element. The natural frequency of this parallel resonance circuit is in the range of the upper operating band of the antenna. The resonance frequencies of the antenna and thus its operating bands can be tuned independently of each other so that the tuning cycle need not be repeated.

    • An antenna system internal to the device especially intended for small-sized mobile stations, the system having separate operating bands. The system is implemented as decentralized in a way that the device (300) has a plurality of separate antennas (310-360). Each antenna is based on (a) radiating element(s) on the surface of a dielectric substrate. The substrate can be, for example, a piece of ceramics or a part of the outer casing of the device. The antennas are located at suitable places in the device. The operating band of an individual antenna covers the frequency range used by one radio system, the frequency ranges close to each other and is used by two different radio systems or only the transmitting or receiving band of the frequency range used by a radio system. If the device has a shared transmitter and a shared receiver for the radio systems using frequency ranges close to each other, there can anyway be a separate antenna for each system or the antenna can also be shared. The antennas can be made very small, because a relatively small bandwidth is sufficient for an individual antenna, when there is a plurality of antennas. A good matching of the antenna is achieved on the whole width of each radio system, because the matching of a separate antenna having a relatively narrow band is easier to arrange than that of a combined multi-band antenna. No switches are needed in the structure for choosing a sub-band, which contributes to good efficiency for its part.

    • A right-hand circular polarized antenna and associated methods. In one embodiment, a quarter-wave antenna configuration is used within a small form factor portable device (e.g. wristwatch). The antenna comprises a radiator element which operates in as a linear polarized antenna while the device is operating in free space. However, when the device is attached to a user (e.g. at a user's wrist), the antenna utilizes the loading of the user's body tissue in order to suppress unwanted signals (e.g. left hand polarized signals) to permit operation in circular polarized mode (e.g. right hand polarized mode), thereby allowing for increased sensitivity to received circularly polarized signals such as those emanated from global positioning satellites.

    • An antenna system internal to a radio device, the system comprising separate antennas and having separate operating bands. The system is implemented as decentralized in a way that each antenna is typically based on a small-sized chip component (310; 320; 330; 340; 350; 360; 610), which are located at suitable places on the circuit board (PCB) and possibly on also another internal surface in the device. The chip component comprises a ceramic substrate and at least one radiating element. The operating band of an individual antenna covers e.g. the frequency range used by a radio system or only the transmitting or receiving band in that range. At least one antenna is connected to an adjusting circuit with a switch, by which the antenna's operating band can be displaced in a desired way. In this case the operating band covers at a time a part of the frequency range used by one or two radio systems. The antennas can be made small-sized, because a relatively small bandwidth is sufficient for an individual antenna, when there is a plurality of antennas. When the bandwidth is small, a material with higher permittivity can be chosen for the antenna than for an antenna having a wider band, in which case the antenna dimensions can be made correspondingly smaller. In addition, a good matching of the antenna is achieved on the whole width of each radio system, because the matching of a separate antenna having a relatively narrow band is easier to arrange than that of a combined multiband antenna.
