    • A control system of the type which provides "breakaway" safety action to energize the electrically actuatable coils of brakes in a trailer pulled by a towing vehicle, the coils being energized under a breakaway condition from an auxiliary battery carried in the trailer. The system includes a voltage threshold indicator which is connected across the auxiliary battery and the coils and which enables the driver to test the auxiliary battery and clearly determine if the battery has sufficient storage capacity to keep the coils adequately energized while load current is being drawn from the battery and supplied to the actual coils themselves -- such system being characterized by the provision of a current threshold sensor which prevents the indicator from providing a "safe" signal if the excitation circuit to the coils has been interrupted or if one or more of the coils has become disconnected from the circuit.

    • A cardiac output measurement device for the real-time, non-invasive measurement of cardiac output that can be effectively operated by relatively unskilled personnel on a routine monitoring basis in a wide variety of office and hospital conditions. To accomplish this task, the system utilizes a pulsed Doppler ultrasound transducer directed through the suprasternal notch of a patient axially towards the blood flow in the ascending aorta. The device automatically searches the ascending aorta at various predetermined depths to find the depth at which the greatest quality blood velocity reading is detected. An examination is performed at that chosen depth and the device automatically calculates a patient's cardiac output from the Doppler measured velocity combined with an aortic diameter estimation made from the patient's height, weight, and age. The device automatically calculates cardiac velocity, cardiac index, stroke distance, heart rate, and stroke volume.

    • A heat convection barrier particularly adapted for use with greenhouses and warehouses consists of a series of inflatable tubes which are suspended beneath the roof of a structure and inflated into contact with each other to form a barrier against heat loss through the roof. Each of the tubes includes an integrally formed seam by which the tubes are suspended beneath the roof and an inflatable main body portion, and the tubes are spaced from each other a distance less than the inflated diameters of the main body portions so that when they are inflated they contact each other and form a continuous barrier. One end of each of the tubes is tied off and the opposite ends are split and wrapped about an apertured conduit and a low pressure fan or blower communicates with one end of the conduit to inflate the tubes. When it is desired to heat the roof of the structure to, for example, eliminate snow loads, the fan or blower may be turned off, allowing the tubes to deflate so that warm air may pass upwardly between the deflated tubes and contact the roof. Alternatively a conduit can be inserted between an adjacent pair of inflated tubes to permit warm air to be pumped into the space between the roof and the tubes.

    • A fluidic actuator includes a central elastic tube with an interior bore and a surrounding sheath formed of braided fibers. End fittings are attached to the tube and sheath at first and second ends thereof and include a cap with a hollow cavity into which an end section of the tube and sheath are inserted and embedded in a hardened adhesive. The hardened adhesive seals off the ends of the tube and strongly bonds the fibers of the sheath to the end caps to provide strong mechanical connections. A fluid coupling may extend through one of the end caps to connection to an end of the tube, with an interior bore in the coupling in communication with the bore in the tube to allow fluid under pressure to be supplied to the interior of the tube. A liquid lubricant may be held in the fibers of the sheath to provide lubrication between the elastic tube and the fibers of the sheath to reduce wear and abrasion of the tube and extend the service life of the actuator.

    • Efficient human-powered or human-power assisted energy generation and transmission system adapted for use with vehicles. The present invention can be utilized to achieve overall energy transmission efficiency superior to mechanical drives that utilize chains and sprockets or other mechanical drive mechanisms. The present invention can completely eliminate the need for multiple sprockets and the associated shifting mechanisms presently used in most bicycles. By utilizing high efficiency, light weight, direct-drive generators and motors, and an input controller, coupled with an efficient energy storage device, the present invention can reduce the overall weight and complexities of mechanical power transmissions, while, at the same time, offer higher overall efficiencies. In addition, the energy output to the output drive device can be controlled, through profiling and with an output controller, to maintain constant output, independent of instantaneous input. Thus, in a human-powered vehicle, constant thrust can be maintained significantly increasing the vehicle efficiency, compared to the cyclical thrust or torque generated using a mechanical system.
