    • The present invention provides a liquid crystal display device capable of suppressing generation of the image sticking in AC mode and a polymer for alignment film materials. The present invention is a liquid crystal display device including: a pair of substrates; a liquid crystal layer containing liquid crystal molecules; and an alignment film, the liquid crystal layer being interposed between the pair of substrates, the alignment film being arranged on a liquid crystal layer side-surface of at least one of the pair of substrates, wherein the alignment film is obtainable by providing a film with an alignment treatment by photoirradiation, the film being formed from an alignment film material, the alignment film material including a polymer containing a first constitutional unit and a second constitutional unit, the first constitutional unit exhibiting a property of controlling alignment of the liquid crystal molecules by photoirradiation, the second constitutional unit exhibiting the property of controlling alignment of the liquid crystal molecules regardless of photoirradiation.

    • The present invention provides a liquid crystal display device that has good reliability and can inhibit an image sticking phenomenon even when a comparatively low temperature is set for baking the alignment layer, and a method for manufacturing such a liquid crystal display device. The liquid crystal display device of the prevent invention includes a configuration in which a liquid crystal layer including liquid crystal molecules is sandwiched between a pair of substrates, and includes an alignment layer on a surface of at least one of the substrates on the liquid crystal layer side thereof. The alignment layer is obtained by performing an aligning treatment by light irradiation on a layer formed using an alignment layer material including a first constituent material and a second constituent material. The first constituent material demonstrates a property of controlling the alignment of the liquid crystal molecules under light irradiation. The second constituent material is a polymer which has no property of controlling the alignment of the liquid crystal molecules, and at least part of which is imidized.

    • The present invention provides a method for manufacturing a liquid crystal display device capable of suppressing display unevenness around a seal in the case of performing PS treatment on a horizontal alignment film formed from a photoactive material. The method for manufacturing a liquid crystal display device of the present invention includes the steps of: forming a horizontal alignment film containing a photoactive material on at least one substrate of a pair of substrates; dropping a liquid crystal composition containing a liquid crystal material and a monomer on one of the pair of substrates, the monomer being contained in an amount of 1.0% by weight or less in the whole liquid crystal composition; curing a sealing material applied to one substrate of the pair of substrates along an outer edge thereof by irradiating the sealing material with light whose wavelength is 40 nm or more longer than an absorption wavelength edge of the monomer; and forming a polymer layer that controls the alignment of liquid crystal molecules adjacent thereto on the horizontal alignment film by irradiating the liquid crystal composition sealed between the pair of substrates with light to polymerize the monomer.
