    • A method implemented for network function placement is disclosed. The method optimizes network function placement for each traffic flow, to minimize the overall inter-pod traffic volume. For each traffic flow going through a data center, the method initiates a pod list. The network functions of the traffic flow is sorted in a descending order by resource demanded. Then one network function is selected one at a time according to the descending order. For each network function, the pods in the pod list is sorted in an ascending order by resource available in each pod. The method selects a first pod for the network function when possible. When no pod in the pod list has enough resource for the network function, the method adds a pod with the most available resource from a pod pool to the pod list, and selects the added pod for the network function.

    • A method is implemented by a centralized control plane device for a software defined networking (SDN) network. The method performs joint inter-domain and intra-domain traffic engineering as a single optimization process with location varying objectives. The method includes generating a joint representation of interdomain and intradomain traffic demand with spatial differentiation where each domain can have individually defined optimization objectives. The method further includes determining a set of candidate paths for each source-destination pairs (SD) in the SDN network using the joint representation, selecting a candidate path from the set of candidate paths for each SD pair in the SDN network, and programming a set of switches in the data plane of the SDN network to forward the data traffic according to the selected candidate path.

    • A method for placing services at network devices is disclosed. A network contains a plurality of network devices and the network offers a set of services to subscribers. Each subscriber of the network utilizes a subset of the set of service, where an order of the services is not predefined. The method starts with ordering the services from the most utilized service to the least utilized, and selects services from the most utilized to the least utilized. For each service, a network device is selected so that placing the service adds a least sum of additional delay based on services already placed in the network, and a path for each subscriber utilizing the service is updated to include the service, where the path is an ordered chain of services, and where the service is inserted in the path to result in minimum addition to delay to the subscriber.

    • A method is implemented in a network element that functions as one of a plurality of controllers for one of a plurality of areas of a split architecture network. The controller provides a control plane for the area of the split architecture network where the controller is remote from a plurality of switches providing a data plane for the area of split architecture network. The controller facilitates optimized routing across the plurality of areas of the split architecture network by providing limited intra-area link cost data to other controllers of other areas of the split architecture network and to traditional routers of a network including the split architecture network. The limited intra-area link cost data provides costs of each possible shortest path traversal of the area of the controller without providing all internal link cost data.
