    • A cache logically disposed in a communication path between a client and a server receives a request for a content item and, in response thereto, requests from the server header information concerning the content item and an initial portion of data that makes up the content item. The cache then computes a first hashing value from the header information and a second hashing value from the initial portion of data. A content identifier is created by combining the first hashing value and the second hashing value. Using the content identifier, the cache determines whether a copy of the content item is stored by the cache; and, if so provides same to the client. Otherwise, the cache requests the content item from the server and, upon receipt thereof, provides it to the client.

    • A system and a method for transparent takeover (or failover) of a remote client TCP connection from a first server in a cluster of interconnected servers to a second server provides the storing of shared state information relative to the connection on each involved server and using of the shared state information to reestablish the connection on the second server. A message using a sequence number to refer to a previously transmitted data element (such as a byte) is sent by the second server and a received client acknowledgement (ACK) of that sequence number, or a higher one, is used to synchronize the server's data packet transmission sequence number with the ACK-transmitted sequence number. If synchronization is successful, then the connection is restarted on the second server from the point of termination/failure on the first server.

    • In accordance with one embodiment of the present disclosure, a system includes one or more computer systems including a memory, one or more processors, and a bypass switch with an open position and a closed position. The one or more computer systems further include computer-executable program code. The computer-executable program code includes one or more virtual machines modules including computer-executable instructions configured, when executed, to cause the one or more processors to implement one or more virtual machines that host one or more guest operating systems and one or more applications. The computer-executable program code further includes a virtual bypass switch module including computer-executable instructions configured, when executed, to cause the one or more processors to, responsive to the availability of the one or more applications, forward packets received on the first physical network interface to at least one of the one or more virtual machines.
