    • A device for giving a visual indication of the amount of residual ethylene oxide present in ethylene oxide treated solid hospital articles and other health devices. The amount of residual ethylene oxide is indicated by the difference in color exhibited by different sensitized areas of the device in the form of an opaque dark colored support member having bonded to its surface a thin film of a cholesteric liquid crystal composition in a solid film-forming binder. The film is made by laying down on the surface of the support member a solution or dispersion of liquid crystals which exhibits a change in color when in contact with ethylene oxide at a temperature from 60.degree. to 100.degree. F. in a solution of the solid binder, then evaporating the solvent. As prepared, the film is in a form adapted to be packaged with goods to be subjected to sterilization with ethylene oxide, a portion of the film being sealed within a transparent enclosure the walls of which possess a permeability to ethylene oxide no greater than that of the material of the treated goods.

    • A heat sensitive recording member capable of acquiring a stable color in selected regions contrasting with the background color of the coated substrate upon exposing these regions to an elevated temperature and comprising a paper or polymeric film substrate and a heat sensitive coating comprising (1) an adduct or mixture of color-forming lactones or spiropyrans with a cyclic polyketo color precursor, (2) a polymeric binder which bonds the reactants to the substrate and optionally (3) a molecular complex between a phenolic compound and an amine and/or an activator to lower the temperature of color formation.

    • Improved pressure marking fibrous record material such as paper is provided wherein the rear surface is in contact with a profusion of liquid droplets of marking material such as ink. The fibers of the paper are vapor treated to render them repellent to the liquid marking material without substantially reducing the porosity of the sheet. Upon application of patterned marking pressure to the paper, the ink droplets are forced through the sheet to form a visible image of the pattern on the top surface. The repellent treatment reduces lateral flow of the ink in the sheet and improves image definition.
