    • A method, system computer program product recorded on a computer readable medium, for fast incremental backup of a storage device includes selecting an area of the data storage device for backup; creating the bitmap of data storage device; reading the selected area of the data storage device; converting data read from the data storage device into a usable format for the comparison of descriptors; reading descriptors of logical storage units of the selected area; discarding selected data access attributes of the descriptors; generating hash values for the descriptors; comparing the hash values of the descriptors of the logical storage units of the selected area with the hash values of the descriptors of previously archived logical storage units; for physical storage units related to logical storage units of the selected area whose hash values of the descriptors are identical to the hash values of the descriptors of the archived logical storage units, checking if these physical storage units need to be backed up; updating the bitmap of data storage device; and backing up contents of the physical storage units marked in the backup. The logical storage units can be files. The descriptors can be compared on a physical storage unit basis.

    • A method of incremental backup of a storage device includes reading descriptors of logical storage units of the storage device; comparing the descriptors of the logical storage units of the storage device with descriptors of archived logical storage units; for logical storage units of the storage device whose descriptors are not identical to the descriptors of the archived logical storage units, backing up contents of physical storage units that correspond to those logical storage units of the storage device; and, for logical storage units of the storage device whose descriptors are identical, performing a comparison step to check if these logical storage units need to be backed up. The logical storage units can be files. The comparison step can be, e.g., (1) bit-wise comparison of the logical blocks, (2) comparing control sums of the logical blocks, and (3) comparing log files relating to the logical storage units The physical storage units can be blocks. The descriptors can be, e.g., MFT entries, hash function values, timestamps, checksums, and file metadata. The descriptors can be compared on a physical storage unit basis. The method further can optionally include generating a bitmap of the physical storage units of the storage device; marking, in the bitmap, those physical storage units that correspond to logical storage units with different descriptors; and archiving content of the physical storage units marked in the bitmap. The method can further optionally include archiving logical storage units of the storage device having the same name as corresponding archived logical storage units of the storage device, but different time stamps.

    • A system for data backup includes a storage device, a backup storage device, and an intermediate storage device. Backup procedure is performed on-line and copies data blocks from the storage device into the backup storage device. When a write command is directed to a data storage block identified for backup that has not yet been backed up, the identified data storage block is copied from the storage device to the intermediate storage device, the write command is executed on the identified data storage block from the storage device, and the data storage block is copied from the intermediate storage device to the backup storage device. In case of an error accessing a block on the storage device, the block is marked as invalid. The intermediate storage device can be external to a file system of a computer that includes the storage device, or can be located in the storage device, or can be a separate partition of the storage device, or can be a file within a file system. The system suspends a write command to the storage device during the data backup process if the intermediate storage device has reached a selected data capacity; and copies a selected amount of data from the intermediate storage device to the backup storage device.

    • A system, method and computer program product for migrating a server include creating an image of a storage device of a first server; during execution of a boot loader on a second server, starting an initialization application that at least partially restores, to a storage device of the second server, operating system data from the image; analyzing a hardware configuration of the second server; modifying at least one driver of an operating system based on the analyzed hardware to enable the operating system of the second server to interface to the storage device of the second server; rebooting the second server using the at least partially restored operating system data; and restoring unaltered portions of remaining data from the image. The second server identification and/or authentication data stored on the image is updated before the rebooting. Identification data of the second server is at least partially replaced with corresponding data stored on the image. The image is unchanged until completion of the restoring step. The restoring is performed over a network. The image is created on the computing system connected to the server over a network. More than one storage device is restored from the image. The restoration step uses an incremental image of the storage device. A boot loader is started in case of failure of the first server.

    • A method of securely deleting data from a storage medium includes generating a bitmap that corresponds to unused locations on the storage medium; initiating a background process that wipes the unused locations, where the background process runs asynchronously with a user application; wiping the unused locations; and updating the bitmap to reflect that the unused locations have been wiped. The wiping can also replace data at the unused locations with random sequences, with pseudo-random sequences, with data generated by a secure deletion algorithm, with application data from the user application, or with all zeros. The wiping can also include repeated writing of predetermined sequences to the unused locations. The unused locations correspond to blocks, clusters and/or sectors. The wiping can also replace data at unused locations that represent portions of any of blocks, clusters and sectors. The wiping can also include wiping any metadata associated with files previously stored at any of the unused locations. The bitmap can correspond to all unused locations on the storage medium. Upon a request for access of data from a wiped location, data that does not correspond to data originally stored at the wiped location can be returned. The bitmap can identify deleted files, and/or inline files, and/or temporary files that are not used by user applications.
