    • A first enrolled user of a message transmission uses the system to transmit an invitation to a second user, who is not enrolled as a user of the system. The second user uses the invitation to download and install a messaging client onto the second user's local machine automatically. The system generates a unique ID for the second user automatically. The system executes the second user's messaging client and configures the second user's account and messaging client with the second user's unique ID and account information obtained from the second user. The system automatically transmits any message contained within the invitation to the second user upon completion of the previous steps. The system thereby minimizes the number of manual steps that must be performed by the second user to create an account and to configure the second user's messaging client for use with the message transmission system.

    • The present invention is a security monitoring system which effectively monitors a large number of areas in a cost effective manner using already existing communications infrastructure. More specifically, the method and apparatus of the present invention warns at least one security post of an undesired condition at a monitored area by sending a fax of an image of the monitored area via a phone line and/or by sending an E-mail of a color image via a global telecommunications network such as the Internet. Generally, the present invention includes a camera for creating a first image of the monitored area at a first time point and for creating a second image of the monitored area at a second time point. In addition, a data storage device stores the first image and the second image, and an image processor, coupled to the data storage device, compares the first image with the second image. A modem, coupled to the image processor, sends a fax of the second image to the at least one security post if the second image is substantially different from the first image. The present invention may further send via the modem a JPEG color image of the second image as an electronic mail to a predetermined security post if the second image is substantially different from the first image.

    • A computer system maps unique addresses to the conventional fax numbers of conventional fax devices (such as conventional fax machines and computing devices having conventional fax capabilities). A transmitting user who is connected to the Internet may send an IP fax to a receiving user who is also connected to the Internet by addressing the receiving user using the receiving user's unique address, even if the sending user and receiving user are not within the same local network. A server outside of the receiving user's local network mediates the transmission of the IP fax from the transmitting user to the receiving user. The server may select a preferred transmission method of the recipient (e.g., conventional fax, IP fax, email, or secure document delivery) and transmit the fax to the receiving user using that preferred transmission method. Transmitted faxes may be in color and/or contain high-definition content.
