    • A system having a camera (18) for capturing video images of a scene in successive image frames, and a computer system (14 or 20) for receiving such video images. The computer system periodically generates a background image of the scene from multiple successive image frames (23) and extracts features in the background image (26), and extracts features for each new image frame received from the camera (28). For each new image frames, the new image frame and the last periodically generated background image are correlated at common locations (parts or regions) associated with the features extracted from the last periodically generated background image and features of the new image frame (30), to determine non-correlated features in the new image frame with respect to the last periodically generated background image (31). If the number and/or percentage of non-correlated features are sufficiently high, and/or the spatial distribution of non-correlated features is sufficiently low, the image frame is determined to have an invalid background (32, 33). When multiple successive frames are determined as having invalid backgrounds, the camera (20) represents an invalid camera.

    • A system for integrating security and access for facilities and information systems is provided including a computer server, information systems, and facility protection systems. The information systems and facility protection systems are coupled for communication to the computer server via a network. Facility protection systems represent an access control system for controlling entry/exit to areas of buildings, such as with badges or other ID Credentials and other systems, such as intrusion detection and fire systems, to provide protection in facility environments. Information systems each represent a computer system requiring user authorization, via computers or terminals capable of connecting thereto, to access information resources or network environments protected by the computer system. Information systems may also include information protection systems requiring user authorization for external access to other information systems. The computer server has a central database which stores at least information defining users and their access privileges to the information systems and to areas of facilities controlled by access control system. Each of the information systems and facility protection systems sends event data to the computer server when an event occurs on its respective system, and an event transaction processor in the computer server determines action(s), if any, to take in response to one or more received events and accordingly sends action data to other information systems and facility protection systems to instruct such systems to automatically respond to security risks representing by such events in real-time. Central management of users and their access privileges, and monitoring of events is further provided.

    • An improved security system for access control using smart card badges and readers, and one or more access controllers coupled to the readers. Each access controller has a database storing for each badge at least a Credential Identifier and an encrypted Authorization Code as badge number and issue code, respectively, and access privileges data for the cardholder. Each badge has memory storing a Credential Identifier and unique Smart Card Serial Number. The Authorization Code is encrypted using a badge's Credential Identifier and unique Smart Card Serial Number using a Site Secret Key. Each reader can read a badge's Credential Identifier and Smart Card Serial Number and generate an encrypted Authorization Code using the read Credential Identifier and Smart Card Serial Number, and the Site Secret Key. The access controller receives from the reader a request having at least the read Credential Identifier and generated Authorization Code as a badge number and issue code, respectively, and uses such in determining whether the cardholder has access at the reader.
