    • Novel and improved methods and apparatus for processing liquid or viscous materials. Essentially, the methods and apparatus involve feeding liquid materials to an annular processing passage for controlled processing. The annular processing passage is provided by two elements. One is a rotatable element carrying at least one processing channel. The other element is stationary and provides a complementary coaxial surface arranged with the channel to provide the enclosed processing passage. Also associated with the stationary element are an inlet for feeding material to the passage, an outlet for discharging material from the passage, an element near the outlet providing a material collecting end wall surface and an element positioned between the inlet and outlet providing a liquid material spreading surface. Rotation of the rotatable element toward the spreading surface provides a coaction between the rotatable element and the spreading surface so that relative movement is established between the rotating inner channel walls and liquid material between the inlet and the spreader surface. Because of the relative movement, the liquid material is spread toward the walls and dragged by the walls through a clearance between the sides of the spreading surface providing member and the side walls as thin layers providing central spaces of the passage downstream of the spreader surface which are free of liquid material. Means are arranged for communicating with the free central spaces to add materials to or withdraw materials from the free central space.

    • A steel-pipe coating process and an apparatus therefor, in which molten resin is extruded through a cross-head die connected to an extruder, into a tubular shape, in a manner to cover or coat the surface of a steel pipe. In this apparatus, a resin outlet in the extruder is communicated through the medium of a resin guide member with a resin inlet of the cross head die. The extruder is secured to a fixed frame, while the cross head die is supported by the fixed frame in a reciprocating manner through the medium of a reciprocating drive member within a given stroke in the direction of the steel pipe being fed. Thus, when the cross head die is reciprocated by means of the reciprocating drive member, the relative speed of the steel pipe being fed to the cross head die being reciprocated may be intermittently varied, whereby the amount of resin being extruded through a cylindrical outlet of the cross head die around the surface of the steel pipe may be intermittently varied.

    • A die assembly for multiple layer extrusion onto a paper web substrate is movable on an overhead support beam from an on-line position over a laminating station to an off-line position transversely adjacent such station. A pair of stationary extruders feed plastic material to the die assembly through a pair of movable feed assemblies each of which includes two straight sections of conduit connected to each other by a rotary joint and connected to the extruder and to the die assembly by further rotary joints so that movement of the die assembly is enabled by a swinging and folding movement of the conduit sections. An improved die adapter is also disclosed for the simultaneous three-layer co-extrusion from the two extruders in which the film thicknesses of the outer layers are controlled with respect to the center layer.
